I work a night-time job, and I also live about thirty minutes away from my place of employment in the town of Clifton Ohio. Between Clifton and Yellow Springs, there’s a four-mile stretch of road, called State Route 343, which is the route I take on the way to work. I’ve only had three minor experiences on this stretch of road, which creepily enough, each occurred at about the same spot.
Story number one: It was around Christmas time about two years ago (I don’t remember exactly when, but the Clifton Mill’s lights were open to the public so that gives me about a month’s stretch of time) and a co-worker was driving me to work that night. We were driving down the road as usual, talking about whatever, when a car came down the road the other way with its brights on. Shelley flashed her lights and then dimmed them as the car approached. When the car was about sixty feet away, she flashed her lights again, to which the other car finally heeded. The headlights disappeared… as well as the entire car! We kinda just laughed it off, because hey, it’s not every day that you see a ghost car while driving down the road.
Story number two: I honestly don’t remember when this one happened, but I’d have to say somewhere around a year ago. My mom and stepdad were driving me to work that night (I’m almost 22 and still don’t have a driver’s license. Sad, ne?). It’s not uncommon for 343 to get foggy on cool nights, what with the gorge running along side it, but this night was rather clear. No fog in sight. My stepdad was driving the car, with my mom in the front passenger seat and me in the back half-asleep when Jim slams on the brakes. That woke me up needless to say, but what caught my attention was the chorus of “Oh my Gods” coming from the front. I only caught a small glimpse of it, but there was a definite foggy figure walking right across the street. In roughly the same spot Shelley and I had seen the car.
Story number three: This happened a few nights ago, just a few days before Labor Day, when again, my mom and stepdad are driving me to work. This night was actually rather foggy; it was thicker up by my house where the water was closer to the road, and it thinned out the closer we got to Yellow Springs. I’m actually awake this time when Jim hits the brakes again, as well as the car that was coming down the road the other way. This time it was a shadow; the fog wasn’t very thick but it was thick enough to see the definite shape of a dark shadow waltzing across the road in, would you know it, the exact same spot. the fact that the other car stopped for it as well said that there was definitely something there. My mom said she had seen two other shadows at the side of the road, but never mentioned it so as to not freak Jim out any more.
So that’s what I’ve experienced regarding State Route 343 thus far. I don’t know the history of the road, or the significance of that one spot, but I suppose maybe I’ll look it up one day. I probably won’t post any further experiences along this stretch of road, unless something really big happens, but another co-worker of mine and I are planning on scouting out Jacoby Road one night, out of boredom and curiosity. If anything happens there, I’ll let you know.
