My dad passed away a couple of years ago, but the ghost stories he used to tell live on…
The first story happened when my dad was a teenager living in Aiea, Hawaii. One day he drove his blue Toyota truck past a heiau (ancient Hawaiian religious site) on his way home. He was almost to his parent’s house when he felt like he needed to look in the rear view mirror. When he did he saw a faceless, limbless spirit floating above his truck bed. He raced home and cowered in the truck cab debating whether or not to run for the house or to call his younger brother to come get him. I never found out which option he chose.
I actually witnessed the second story. It was a very scary event. We were getting ready for bed on a school night and my dad had a seizure of some sort. His eyes rolled back in his head and he fell unconscious at the foot of his bed. An ambulance came and he was given a clean bill of health a short while later. Of course my family was relieved. Until we saw that all our ti plants on the side of the house had withered and died. In Hawaii ti is considered good luck and is remarkably hardy.
My last ghost story involving my dad happened after his passing. He was quite young (57). I was preparing a photo collage for his funeral and had fallen asleep after crying over some pictures. I was awoken by the familiar smell of his cologne. The same cologne I used to tease him about over applying. I shouldn’t have smelt it since I was in my house and there was no bottle of the stuff there. I like to think it was his spirit comforting me on his way to a better place.
