Ghost at My Grandmothers House

Posted on November 23, 2009

Whenever these events happened at my grandmothers house, I was young. She moved out of the house in two005, and since then there has already been two different families living in that house.

My family all believed it was ghost, but a friendly one haunting the house. The house, which is in Voorhees, NJ, USA, is a one level house, with 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, living room, family room, kitchen, and a large basement. From the stories my parents, aunts and uncles, and grandmother told apparently there was a family living in the house and one of their daughters had been diagnosed with cancer. I know that this was a long time ago, probably earlier 1900s, when this family lived there. Their daughter died of the cancer, but I’m not sure how old she was or if she died in the house at the time. That’s just the background of the house.

When I was a little kid, I would spend the night over my grandmoms house, and because she didn’t have a good back, she slept in a mechanical reclining chair in the master bedroom, and my crib was against the wall by the door. When sitting in the chair you can’t see the crib or anything behind you for that matter, I’m not sure if this is why I always got scared, but she also had this picture of these 3 black and white rabbits hanging over the crib. That picture I remember scared the crap out of me, and honestly it still does and I’m not sure why but I do remember having nightmares about it. I don’t think that has anything to do with the ghost but it was just something weird that would happen.

Just to let you visualize the house a little more, when you’d walk into the front door, you’d be in the living room, she just had two couches there and a giant shelving unit. Nothing creepy ever happened in that room. But if you walked straight into the room, you could turn right into a small hallway which had the bathroom on the left, a small room (used as her sewing room which I was scared to death to go into alone, day or night) on the right, and then at the end of the hall her room was on the left, and right across was a guest bedroom which also had a creepy feeling to it. Now backtrack a little bit, if you stayed in the living room rather than turning and going down the hallway, you could walk from the living room into the dining room. But before you got to the dining room, there was a door on the right that led to the basement. That’s where most of the weird stuff would happen. (My two uncles lived down there and helped my grandmother out, so the door to the basement was like a bathroom closet door, it had to slits in it so you could easily yell downstairs for someone) Anyways once in the dining room you could turn left and you’d be in the kitchen.

Only one strange event happened here before. The family room was past the kitchen, with three small steps to get down into the room. There was a fireplace in there, a sliding glass door to go to the backyard, and the door to go into the garage. This room was the biggest in the house, and I’m not sure that and the sliding glass door going to the backyard was the reason why the room got to be freezing cold at some points. Back track again..you go down to the basement, it was mainly open except for two rooms, one at the back of the basement where my one uncle stayed, and another one that was right to the left as soon as you got down, and that’s where my other uncle stayed. In the basement, my uncle had a bar and a pool table, plus his big lab dog stayed down there with him. Now that you know the house, it might be easier to picture what events happened.

One night while my parents, brother and I were visiting my grandmom, my dad and uncle went to the liquor store and my mom stayed down stairs shooting pool by herself. At some point my brother and I yelled for her to come upstairs and she set her pool stick on one end of the table. After dealing with us, she went back down stairs walked to the pool table, grabbed her stick, but stopped and she said the hairs stood up on the back of her neck because she had just walked to the opposite end of where she had left her stick at before coming upstairs. Now no one was down there when that happened. My brother who is three years younger than I am and I were both upstairs, along with my grandmother and the dog. That was the first incident that happened downstairs. The second was one time while everyone was sitting at the bar my mom felt something cold and wet on her hand and thinking it was my uncles dog, she told him to stop and looked down only to realize the dog wasn’t even downstairs.

My mom has told us these stories several times and I honestly believe her because if you knew my mom, she isn’t one to lie, especially about things like that and you know for sure because you can tell she still gets freaked out when she talks about them. I’m not sure why but she’s the only one I know of that had experienced strange things down there. I wonder if maybe she looked like the girl who had died mother and she thinks its her own mom or what. I haven’t heard my uncles or dad ever tell any stories but I’ll ask and I’ll post if they have anything to say about it.

The only other things that had happened were a vase on the center of the kitchen table, being pushed off and crashing to the floor in the middle of the night and clearly it wasn’t the dog. Stuff would go missing and we wouldn’t be able to find it even after clearing the whole house out before she had moved. Also things would randomly move on their own. You would leave a room and come back to find objects in different spots. They always thought it was a friendly ghost because it never seemed to try to cause any harm to anyone at the house. Since she had moved out, we know there has been two different families that have lived there. We still wonder that if maybe the first family, who I believe was either a single mother and her child or mom and boyfriend with their kid, ever encountered the ghost and maybe got scared off or if they just moved for financial or other reasons. Either way something paranormal was definitely happening in that house and I’m thankful that I don’t spend most weekends there any longer.
