English Civil War Ghost By The Gate

Posted on February 24, 2009

Hi my name is Simon and I have a story to tell you. In February 1997, I went to stay at a friends house for the weekend. I had known my friend Robert since Primary school (the equivalent to Grade school in US.)

It was Saturday and an overcast day. We had gone to Berry Pomeroy Castle (in England) and haunted site in it’s own right. It was now afternoon and Robert was driving me down a lane, he previously had a dangerous encounter with a ghost. This lane, I must explain, led to Chudleigh, South Devon, England. On this lane, farther down was a Cemetery (still being used today.)

Me and Robert were chatting having a laugh when I noticed by a layby a figure. I yelled for Robert to stop. He put the brakes on and eventually stopped a couple of meters beyond the layby. I asked him to reverse to the layby. When We got there, the figure had vanished from the layby. But By the layby was a rusty metal agricultural gate and beyond that, a-ways, an half ruined building to the left of me. To the right, the figure had returned but was in the field next to the building.

He wore what I thought were English Civil War clothes and had a red mark across the neck. ( I realized that evening that it was a cut throat!) He wore a wide brim hat (I asked my now deceased granddad about it and he told me that the ghost was a Royalist.) I began to get a feeling of overwhelming evil! I told Robert to put his foot to the floor just as I got the feeling of a singular, male finger going up and down my back.  I screamed and Robert broke the speed limit to get us home.

On the way to his home, we went down the High Street and passed  the local Parish Church at which I heard a swear word spoken in my ear and the feeling went. At Robert’s house, his mum was there I told here what happened and she dismissed it until I showed her my back. There was large scratch down the middle of my back!

To explain about the English Civil war, it was a civil war between Parliament and  King Charles the first.
