Civil War Era House in Maryland

Posted on June 14, 2010

My aunt and uncle were living in a Civil War-era house, in Maryland, when my cousin Gary Lee was born in 1987. I found the house incredibly creepy (I was seven at the time) and did not like the “feel” of the house. I sensed a somewhat lonely and unhappy male presence there. They didn’t live there more than a year.

My aunt had two ghostly experiences in the house. One time she was taking a bath upstairs. She heard footsteps outside the door, saw the shadow of feet as you would normally and assumed it was her husband, Gary, wanting to use the bathroom or something. But he went away without saying a word. When she got done, she went outside and told him he could have come in the bathroom, she was just taking a bath. He looked at her with a puzzled glance, since he had been building a rock wall outside the whole time and had never even been in the house, let alone upstairs. Keep in mind the only other person in the house was their infant. My Uncle Gary is not one for practical jokes AT ALL and definitely wouldn’t have lied to her about something like that.

The other time, my aunt was alone in the house (besides my cousin, who was sleeping in his crib in their downstairs bedroom) and was watching a movie on TV. She was alone, Uncle Gary being away on a business trip. She heard footsteps in the stairway up to the second floor. It wasn’t little creaks and groans, it was the definite sound of a man walking either up or down the steps. As we all do after a time, we know the sounds of our own household and she was not mistaken. She saw nothing, but it was nighttime (dark outside) and it gave her a scare, big-time. Before long, they moved from the house. No one moved in afterwards. It was boarded up for some time, until it was bought and restored to a beautiful condition a few years later. For the record, my aunt would never make things like that up and never had any interest in the paranormal before those experiences.

My cousin Gary Lee believes that since his first home was a haunted house, he has a gift for seeing and feeling supernatural things. He has a keen interest in the subject and had had a few impressive experiences of his own. There is something out there beyond this life, something we can’t yet comprehend.

i’m sure your house retains memories and energies from the time it was built! they sound harmless.

WOW! The older the house the more memories build up and the more memories stay in the walls. Civil war would mean the house is very old. Can you just imagine all that house has seen? I am glad to hear it was restored but I have no doubt that it is very haunted! Thanks for sharing!

not very scary…. i mean we all think we can hear footsteps from time to time.
