When I was about 10-11 yrs old, we lived in a really old high set house built in 50-60's and my parents owned a minimart right next door.
Every day after school my sister and I would walk home and wait for my parents to finish work and come home. One night about 8 pm I got all excited cause I heard tools rattling downstairs and thought my father finished work early. I ran down the stairs and noticed the light was not on. Being confused I yelled out "dad" but there was no response.
Downstairs was always locked, but I could always climb over the wall and jump through and forgetting to turn on the light from upstairs I continued anyway. While creeping through I couldn't see anyone, I wasn't scared at the time because I swore 100% I heard tools rattling and wanted to know what dad was up to.
After scouting the area no one was down there so I climbed back out and walked to the minimart next door and saw dad sitting there with mum chatting away. I asked him "Were you at home just a while ago cause I heard tools rattling?".
Dad responded "No been here all the time".
My jaw just dropped and I couldn't go back to the house until my parents finished work cause I was too scared even though my sister was upstairs watching TV. Since then my sister and I do hear tools rattling, but we tend to ignore it.
Same house with another "encounter" - my sister and I use to have a competition of who had to open the door for our parents as we were lazy back then. Having came across many situations when we can definitely hear someone/something walking up the stairs and we both yell "your turn" whoever says it first the other had to open the door.
Once we opened the door, but there was no one there. This not only happened once it happened close to 10-15 times and this is both of us hearing "them" walking upstairs. Note: the stairs were very old and made a lot of noises so it was not hard at all to confirm someone was walking up them.
Talking to my parents nowadays about our old haunted house they agreed there was a "being" there of some kind, but they did not advise us because we were only kids and didn't want to scare my sister and I. My parents believed they were good ghosts as well as they said one sign was from both my sister and I falling down the stairs on separate occasions with no scratches or serious injury. One of us getting away with it might be lucky but both us, coincidence? I think not.
