The Dog Hating Ghost

My wife and I have had two Jack Russell Terrier dogs as pets for about seven years. By nature, they are hyper dogs and I have learned, over the years, not to get too excited when either of them get too excited. That was, until about a year ago.

One evening, around 08:30 P.M., my wife and I had just put our two young children to bed and had finally sat down in the living room to eat dinner and watch television. Our oldest dog, Ebby, walked into the kitchen to get a drink of water. I could hear him drinking but paid him little mind until, suddenly, I heard a very loud crash that sounded as though some one had thrown a pan against the wall and then it had hit the floor. Immediately following the "crash" our dog ran, terrified, into the living room and jumped up on the couch.

My wife and I, both, immediately ran into the kitchen to see what had happened. There, on the far side of the kitchen floor, lay the aluminum dog dish with a trail of water reaching across the tile floor and splashed across the lower kitchen cabinets. It looked as though the dish had been hurled across the room.

My wife and I were both a bit rattled but mostly curious as to how our dog had performed such a feat. However, we eventually reasoned that, where as he was the only living creature in the room at the time, he simply must have been the culprit.

There were no other strange, "dog dish" related events until approximately a week later. On this particular occasion, my wife was at a part time, third shift job that she occasionally works so I was at home, alone.

At approximately 02:00 a.m. the baby woke me. I was dreadfully tired but managed to pull myself out of bed to tend to his needs. About 30 minutes later, still thoroughly exhausted, I laid down in bed and fell almost immediately back to sleep.

Beside our bed is a second, aluminum dog dish that rests, snugly, in a homemade rectangular stand that was fabricated by my Father-in-law from plastic, plumber grade pipe. As I laid in bed, I awoke just enough to hear and see Ebby walk into the bedroom and begin drinking out of the dish. After a few seconds, I heard a loud, "metallic" crash, sat up in bed and saw Ebby running down the hall toward the living room.

As sleepy as I was, the only thought that went through my head was, "well, there he goes again; I'm going to have one heck of a mess to mop up in the morning." I then rolled over and went back to sleep.

When I woke up in the morning, I immediately looked down beside the bed to survey the damage. However, neither the dog dish nor the stand were anywhere to be found. I immediately rose and began looking directly behind and underneath the bed however still could not locate either item.

Finally, I looked across the room and discovered both the dog dish and the stand, turned upside down, resting perfectly "flush" against the base of the chest of drawers. As was the case in the kitchen, there was a trail of water that reached across the carpeted floor and clear signs of water having splashed across the face of the chest of drawers as well as on a near by wall.

Upon discovering this, I was immediately horrified. I called my wife and explained to her what had occurred. We have had several interesting phenomenon in our home so she quite naturally responded with her assurance that she believed me. However, she requested that I leave everything just as I had discovered it so that she could see, for herself, when she returned home.

While I was waiting for my wife to return home, I called my brother and shared my story with him. I have shared more than a few stories with my brother of strange occurrences that have taken place in our home however none of them ever resulting in aftermath that he could actually observe. After we said our goodbyes, he immediately drove over to our home to see for himself. To say the least, he was thoroughly amazed.

To this day, I cannot explain, on either occasion, who hurled the dog dish and, in the second event, the dog dish stand across the room. The safe answer would be that some how Ebby did it. But, I fail to see how a small dog could have done so with such force and while he was in the process of drinking. Rather, it was as if some one or some thing had reached down, jerked it out from under him and then hurled it across the room in one sweeping motion. Either way, it has never happened again since that most disturbing morning. And, hopefully, it never will again.
