Who Was Enoch and Why Was the Book of Enoch Excluded from the Bible?

I would like to ask and discuss Enoch and the Book of Enoch.

Who was Enoch? Why was the Book of Enoch not included in the Bible? A lot of websites I have read claim that the Book of Enoch was a forgery and not “real” at all.

The Book of Enoch is “an ancient composition known from two sets of versions, an Ethiopic one that scholars identify as ’1 Enoch’, and a Slavonic version that is identified as ’2 Enoch’, and which is also known as The Book of the Secrets of Enoch. Both versions, of which copied manuscripts have been found mostly in Greek and Latin translations, are based on early sources that enlarged on the short biblical mention that Enoch, the seventh Patriarch after Adam, did not die because, at age 365, ‘he walked with God’ – taken heavenward to join the deity.”
- Zecharia Sitchin, When Time Began

“Prior to the eighteenth century, scholars had believed the Book of Enoch to be irretrievably lost: composed long before the birth of Christ, and considered to be one of the most important pieces of Jewish mystical literature, it was only known from fragments and from references to it in other texts. James Bruce changed all this by procuring several copies of the missing work during his stay in Ethiopia. These were the first complete editions of the Book of Enoch ever to be seen in Europe.”

  1. Hello,

Hmmm..well from my own reading of the Bible, I understood it that Enoch walked with God and it says that God took him, but, the Bible also says flesh and blood cannot enter into heaven so where would that put Enoch all this time? … My mind runs faster than my fingers can type lol.. I’ve heard in many friendly decussions that Enoch would be one of the witnesses brought back to preach in the book of Revelations.. would like to hear what Ms. Ama thinks about it… this is one of many matters I’ve pondered about too..

    • Or the Virgin Mary for that matter; she was supposed to have ascended into Heaven body and all. Question to ponder.

  2. Hello Caretaker,

Thank you. I hope we will see more interest and discussion/debate on this particular question as it is quite fascinating – I think.

I did read Graham Hancock’s book ‘The Sign & the Seal’ over ten years ago when it was first published but cannot remember it’s contents.

I’m rather suspicious of the deliberate loss of the Book of Enoch.
I say deliberate because of reference to it being a forgery. I’m still in the middle of reading the more recently published version and it would seem, much of the content can be found in the Christian bible. Further comments will be made once I’ve read all of it.

    • Thanks Pat, I too read that book (as well as a couple other G Hancock books) when it was first published. Very interesting stuff and if I still had a copy I would read through it again.

  3. In the Bible, where does it say that flesh and blood can not enter “The Heaven?”

The only thing that I know about two certain prophets mentioned in the Book of Revelation is that they will have the power to destroy whatever sort of weapon that man can use to attack them. Why were they being attacked?

However, eventually these two prophets will in fact die, and they will left in the street where they died. The Bible says that the whole world will witness these things, and they will celebrate the death of these two men.

On the third day after their death, the prophets will be ressurected, and once again, the whole world will witness this. I believe that Jesus Himself died, and on the third day He was ressurected. Is this a coincidence?

    • To anyone who just read my previous response, I apologize for posting a reply about the two prophets mentioned in the Book of Revelation. As I was reading, I came across an earlier reply/question about these two persons.

Things like this happen because my short term memory isn’t always reliable. Somethings I forget, and at other time, things seem to blend together.

Wikipedia has some interesting information about Enoch. It seems that Enoch is mentioned in Jewish mysticisim.

  4. Hi Pat,

Hmm.. Enoch, the 7th Patriarch after Adam .. given that we don’t even know if ‘Adam’ actually existed .. and allowing for the fact that humans, although sinful, lived longer than 100 years .. we are looking at 600 or 700 years after ‘Adam’ .. or three times that amount, if Enoch did live to be 365 years old. In reality most of the early civilization’s people lived between 30-50 years, and 60 was ancient, so it was probably more like 210 years or less.

I answered the why question on the other question site but basically the story of Enoch’s visions doesn’t teach us anything about Jesus or God, it mainly talks about fallen angels etc. And they really have no place in a bible that was already getting to be too big and unweilding for most people to handle. Since the Christians did not want us talking ‘to’ our angels, better not to mention that a lot of people did – heck no, make all the visions scary to keep people from investigating the unseen. That was, as is written in the bible, the way to hell, and really, Revelation had enough drama in it to satisfy those who wanted to scare the populous into line.

Enoch did not die, he was ‘taken by God’ into the heavens and became .. Metatron .. an archangel. Or he did if you believe all the new age hype. Personally I don’t. The angels’ names all end in EL .. those that belong to ‘God’ anyway, the rest .. belong to other civilizations and belief systems. So one could speculate, if one wanted to, that the ‘god’ of another civilization snatched Enoch away .. but then .. who wrote his book and told of what Enoch saw, if it was not Enoch .. who was supposed to be an angel by then .. so why would he bother writing for humanity at all? 1 Enoch is a fascinating book of an alternate explanation of Genesis etc, but not much more. And then, did he come back, a few hundred years later and write 2 Enoch, and 3 Enoch later still, after Jesus had come and gone?

I doubt very much the Books of Enoch were lost deliberately, it was simply not accepted, therefore not important .. except to certain churches, like the Ethiopians, who did not practise an accepted form of Christianity anyway. They have their own version of the Bible. I suppose, when the need arose, the Enoch books reappeared, but .. I think they should be treated as mythology, not fact.

And I really should read them again. It’s been a few years since the last time.

I wonder if the real Enoch would be horrified with what someone did with his reputation for being sane and sensible, given that he was supposed to be a Patriarch, and you didn’t just get handed that job for no reason. You had to be a very wise and clever man. No, instead he was supposed to have had visions, just like ‘John’ had in Revelation. Were they both insane, both visionaries, or both written by people for political reasons? We can never know .. until we get that time machine.

And btw, Pat, I believe in fallen angels, have ‘met’ them and watchers on a few occasions, so I don’t think Enoch was deluded, but then I don’t know if he existed at all.

  5. I too have read the version of the book of Enoch that is available, and a handful of Zecharia Sitchin’s work…I have to ponder if the “Nefilim” in the book (also in the bible, no great revelations in reading the book really) were not aliens from another planet…when Enoch went home ‘whole”, could he not have just gotten on the ship with them?

Sorry the more I read the more sense the theory that life on earth was created by aliens…taking the DNA of apes, mixing it with theirs and creating an intelligent slave race to mine gold…I’ve read it in enough places, and too much in the Bible could be extraterrestrial, and too much of the Bible is meant for control/political motives.

That said I still believe in God, just not so sure I buy the Judeo Christian version I’ve been fed.

  6. Enoch is actually the man that the Annunaki took to their planet Niburu to meet their ruler ANU and he could not survive there because his body could not handle it and Anu thought highly of him.

I can not remember the name the Sumerian tablets give Enoch. But The Book Of Enoch opens a whole bunch of new cans of worms for the Christian’s and the other 2 Judaic religions to explain away and that is the real reason he was left out of the bible.

The Judaic religions try to discount these writings but they have all of the major stories of the Torah in them.It only makes all the sense in the world that Abraham retold these stories after all he was from UR.And all religions use parts of older religions to start a new one.And you always pass down stories from your homeland.

People try to discount these writings but I find them fascinating especially when you can sort of collaborate them in a sense from other creation stories from around the world even our American Indian’s creation stories collaborate these stories.

People tend to think that it is only the flood story that is universal but there are many more than just that one story about the flood that you can find that are similar.

One good thing about being an Atheist is you can read all of the holy books and historical books and writings without any emotion getting in the way and see them all for what they are.LOLOLOLOL But,if you are interested in these stories they are all over the internet google Zechariah Sitchen.I find all of the creation stories enthralling,I can not get enough of them. They are gaining a lot of credibility.I have a hard time believing anything that is why I am learning all of them.To see which ones make more sense.LOLOLOL

    • “Zecharia Sitchin spent nearly his entire adult life believing that he had hit upon the true origins of humankind, which he said were revealed by the Sumerians thousands of years ago.

According to his translations of ancient Sumerian texts on stone tablets, modern man (homo sapien) was the product of prehistoric man (Homo erectus) and an alien race known as the Annunaki…”

        • The article discusses that plus there are links to other points of view – even those who disagree on that page

      • Hi CT,

Thank you for the link. I am going all over the place with the reading and its all fascinating!!

    • …like the ‘virgin’ birth…it’s in every ancient religion…not just Christianity…

Still believe in God though…just not religion.

    • Hi Christine,

You don’t have to be an athiest to read the books of various religions, including Christianity, with a critical eye. I am Christian and the Bible is a great book of history, mystery, fact and pure fiction – but I still love it.

We actually have NO idea who Enoch is, was, or if he even existed. The same with the Annunuki .. until they arrive and want to shake hands with every living human on the street, I’ll reserve judgment. One man’s opinion is just that, an opinion.

      Love & Peace
      Ama

      • I dont know what the truth is but Sitchins work is based upon much more than just opinions.

  7. Simple, everything in todays Bible is all that you need to know to seek and find a loving daily relationship with God by accepting the gift of attaining that relationship through the death, burial, and ressurrection of His Son Jesus Christ. It is a complete guide book on how to know God personally and exactly how to live a life that is pleasing to Him, by following Christ example. He lived a perfect sinless life, we can’t but it is our faith and our will to do our best to live a Christ Like life and the Blood of Christ that washes away our sins that allow our Holy God to look upon us. Living a life pleasing to God is what prepares us for living eternity in Heaven in His Holy presence. Do we need to know about the watchers and and the nephilim to do this. Absolutely not. There is nothing essential in those non-cannonized books for knowing the way to God, what Christ did for all of us and how to please God by living a Christ like life. I believe these books can answer some questions for those who seek a deeper knowledge or have been given certain gifts by God and need the understanding to carry it out. There is everything that you need to fulfill God’s plan for your life between Genesis and Revelation.

    • Morning JK,

A life pleasing to God. I love that idea. :-) So every hooligan who goes into a market place and smashes up the ‘money lenders’ tables is pleasing God? (Jesus did that). Can I do it to the banks here in Australia who just all posted $1.3+ billion dollar profits for this 1/4 of the year, and laid off, up to or more than, 1000 people (each of the four banks) to ensure the profit remains? I know I’d like to, so would the folk they fired while the bosses are lining their pockets with huge bonuses. And some of them are supposed to be Christians.

I agree that no one needs to know the watchers or the nephillim. We have enough to deal with with demons. We don’t need to know them either.

      Love & Peace
Ama (as cranky about the situation as I sound)
