Does Meditation Open Doorways to Demons?

Several times recently I have seen where someone commented on a story here and they claimed that meditating was a bad thing to do and that it opened up a person to problems with demons or other entities.

Personally I believe meditation is a good thing and that it does not make one vulnerable to “evil” but I wanted to present this question to everyone.

Does Meditation Open Doorways to Demons?

  2. Hi CareTaker,

There are many kinds of meditation. The main two are focused or ‘guided’ meditation and the other is through breathwork which changes the structure of your auric energy, but doesn’t usually attract demons.

Meditation generally soothes the mind and nerves. It allows a person to become more focused. It can adjust your heart rate, and promote healing. It just depends on what you want it to do.

Demons are generally not attracted to meditating people. They feed on negativity and meditating is generally a positive process.

In guided meditation you might choose to meet your guides and angels. If you are daft enough you might try and contact a demon .. but it is not the meditation that is the problem, it is the choice of the person at the time of meditation that might draw trouble to them.

So don’t go into a meditation expecting to meet demons and you generally won’t. If any are hanging around you, you may well be aware of their presence already .. they might be subtle in the beginning, but they are not that subtle. And if you sense something negative around you when you are in the meditation .. pull out of it. Open your eyes and wiggle your toes. Eat something. That grounds your spirit back into your body .. even drinking water will do that quickly. And then ask yourself why you think it happened? Is there some issue you need to address? Are you a very angry person? Do you hate easily? Start working on your issues so that you will not attract negative beings to yourself .. and meditation can be part of that healing process. You can use it to help you to track down, in your own mind, when and where you were hurt, and by whom, so that you can release the hurt, forgive the person and yourself, and be free and happy.

Some people cannot meditate. It’s not something wrong with you (or me, for that matter). We simply do not require it as part of our spiritual practise, but we can still benefit from the peace that comes from sitting and listening to beautiful gentle music, or contemplating some passage of wisdom from a great book, a thought or memory, a good feeling, or simply the gentle silence or the sound of the rain. We all find peace and healing in different ways.

BTW, some Christian groups believe that meditation opens us up to negative entities .. but ask them about ‘contemplation’ and you’ll find that that is just fine. It’s the same thing! LOL

    • Excellent comment Ama, as are all of your posts. Much appreciated.

  3. Meditation itself is not a bad thing. It depends on how the meditator do it. If he/she meditate to a Demon, of course it will open the gate to the Demons. But, actually, meditation is a process of calming your body, mind and spirit to create a harmony in your life. It has many various effect, like, increasing your health, inspire you to find the solution for your problems, and many other positive effect. So, in the end, I will say that meditation is a VERY GOOD thing to do.

  4. I’ve been meditating for years. I started during a really stressing time and found that it was the only thing that could calm me and help me pull myself together on some of the worst days of my life. I’ve never had a negative meditation experience, and quite honestly, I have never met anyone who has.

  6. Meditation was my “saviour” during a very dark and depressing period in the late 80′s. Actually, my doctor recommended meditation to me.

When my family found out I was meditating, they were horrified. They told me I was opening myself up to all sorts of demons.

A few years ago, their church introduced meditation. I of course questioned my mother about this. She said it was totally different to the way I meditate, as her meditation is done through Jesus Christ.

    Hilarious I say.

  7. There is a type of Christian prayer called centering prayer that is very much like meditation. I practice this (or at least I attempt to) and it has really helped me. There’s lots of information out there about it, if you are interested.

While meditation, by emptying your mind of distractions, may make you more aware of anything or anyone in spirit form that happens to be in your immediate vicinity, I don’t see how it could attract anything or anyone who would not be otherwise attracted.

  8. Hi Mary,

I would be very interested to know about the Centering Prayer. Could you please tell me about it, or send me web links to learn about it.

    Thank you and Happy Easter

  9. Hi Ama,

A good website for information on centering prayer is http://www.contemplativeoutreach.org . I learned about it from the book by Fr. Thomas Keating: Open Mind, Open Heart, which I recommend. It’s not hard to begin and it only takes 20 – 25 minutes once or twice a day. It’s part of the contemplative side of Christianity and, to me, is sort of “sitting with God.” It’s partly an attempt to put into practice Matthew 6:6 : when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret….

    Happy Easter to you!
    Mary

  10. Hi Mary,

I wonder who ‘your Father who is in secret’ refers to? I know the chapter refers to people who pray in public just to be seen, but the sentence doesn’t make sense to me. Hmm….. I shall take it back to the Greek in my Interlinear Bible (my other favourite) and the line actually reads “But, when you pray, enter into the room of you and shutting the door of you, pray to the Father of you in secret; and the Father of you seeing in secret will repay you in the open …” that makes more sense – the action is secret, not ‘the Father’.

Translations can be a puzzling thing. I shall now go and investigate the webpages.

Thank you for giving me the link and something new to think about as well,
    Love & Light
