The Spirit of Our Next Door Neighbor

Posted on November 13, 2009

About a year ago, our next door neighbor had died from complications due to a long illness. My husband and I were very good friends with our neighbor and his family, and still are very close with his widow and his son, who has, I’m sad to say, passed on as well within the past month or so due to cancer.

A couple of days after our neighbor had passed away, my husband and I were taking our usual evening walk around the neighborhood. A couple of blocks from our house was a construction site where a house was being built (it’s up on concrete blocks, which is pretty common where we live due to being next to the ocean and flooding and such). When we walked past this construction area, for some reason, I felt like someone was watching me go by. I looked up at the house and I saw this man standing on the roof area, which looked to be in his late twenties or early thirties, with short black hair, and he was wearing a pair of shorts, a t-shirt, and dark shoes with white socks. The first thing that came to mind was it was someone who was working on the house, but it seemed strange to me because it was in the evening time, and most people have stopped work for the day. My husband and I walked up the road for just a few minutes, and then turned around and came back. When we passed that same house again, where I saw the man, I noticed that he was no longer there. I thought to myself, and I also told my husband, that I had seen someone standing on top of the house, and that I can’t believe how fast he had gotten off that roof and had gotten away in that short period of time.

A couple of days later, the widow of our neighbor had shown us some pictures of her late husband.  When I saw a picture of her husband in his early years, I couldn’t believe my eyes!!  That was a picture of the man who was standing on the roof of the house starring down at me!!  I shared this with my husband, later on that evening and he believed me.  The next day, he had shared this with the our neighbor’s widow, and she said that she had believed me as well.  She also said that she thinks that her husband’s spirit has stayed around the house for awhile.  She said that her husband use to like to stay up and watch television late at night (he was a retired firefighter and security guard).  Also, he did not like to have newspapers all over the house and would put them in a pile on the kitchen table.  And she said, that when she’d turn off the t.v. before going to bed at night, that she would be awakened by the sound of the t.v. being on around 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning *her son had his own t.v. in his bedroom, plus would never think of turning on the t.v. in the living room that early in the morning and waking up his mom).  Also, sometimes at night, both her and her son would hear the sound of newspapers being moved around and would go into the kitchen a little later on to find the newspapers in a pile on the table, just like the way her late husband would arrange them.

My husband and I would also have some paranormal experiences in our house as well.  Before we had moved into our house, our next door neighbors had rented this house for awhile for their son to live in, and they would come over to the house (that we’re living in now) quite often.  One time for instance, my husband was home alone one day, and was surfing on the computer, when he suddenly heard this faint knocking on the large picture window that is next to our front door.  My husband said that it sounded a little spooky and it gave him the chills.  Then, one night, we were in bed, and we thought that we heard the sound of someone knocking on the window above our bed.  So, my husband yelled out to our deceased neighbor (which took me surprise, might I add) and told him to go away and leave us alone!  After that, the knocking stopped.  Our next door neighbor’s widow said that she hasn’t heard anything else out of her late husband anymore either.  All this happened a month after he had passed away.  And now, there’s peace…from him.  I think that he may have just hung around for awhile until he felt like it was okay to cross over.

As for our neighbor’s son, who just passed away only a month or so ago, our neighbor said that she will sometimes hear the bathroom door squeak open when it’s actually closed, or that she will hear footsteps walking around in her son’s old bedroom.  She said that she hopes that her son will find peace as well soon, and will pass on to the other side too.  She asked us if we have been hearing things, and we told her, no, so far so good.  And, we hope that it stays that way.

Thank you so much for listening to my story.

Bonnie,, awesome post!!! the strange things about seeing loved ones from the other side is,,, wonderful, and scary at the same time.. we wonder why they are here, are they stuck, do they need to finish something?? my opinion is,, from a lot of experience,,,, i really thing that people pass very quickly to Heaven….. and i trully believe,, the reason some of them come back, is to say hello,,, that they are fine…

also,, there is limbo,, some spirits are confused!!! so,, they come back for our help….. i dont think they are just floating around, they are in heaven,, but confused……

like i said,, just my opinion, and my experience!!!!! i deal with loved ones that have passed on,, often…… its a magical thing!!!!!

something to think about,, when we pass to the other side,, im sure, some people have business to finish… and some, are not ready to go….. Heaven and earth, and very connected…….

    wonderful story…… God bless,,, ktm

Nice story. I find it comforting when they come to us in their younger years……maybe when most vibrant and happy? My mother came to myself and my oldest niece (the first grandchild), in our dreams.

In her dream, my mother was approximately 18-20 years old and was riding a bike near a forest and waving to my niece, saying ‘I love you’! In mine she was about the 20ish and walked up to me and said ‘I love you mija’ (term of endearment in Spanish), and kissed my cheek.

hi, anything else happen in this story? did you call a papmoral expert?

  6. Bonnie says:

    Hi KTM,

It’s so nice to hear from you. Thank you for your comment to my story. I agree with you, sometimes our friends and loved ones, who have passed on, do seem to want to come back and say hi, finish up some unfinished business, or maybe are just not ready to pass over until they make sure that their loved ones are fine. In the past, I have had so many wonderful dreams of my mom and I shopping or doing something fun together, like we use to do when she was alive (mainly when I was alot younger and still living at home. Of course, when I left home to join the Navy, we didn’t have a chance to do alot things together as often as we use to. My mom sure did miss that, and so did I. I can still remember the first Christmas when I came home on leave. My sisters and I had made these plans for several months. Mom and I use to volunteer for the American Red Cross together as a “mother and daughter” team. We use to volunteer at the Air Force Base hospital, close to where we use to live. On the night that I flew in, one of my sister’s picked me up at the airport. We immideately drove over to the Base hospital, where mom was volunteering. It was a couple of days before Christmas Eve, and mom was setting up for the Christmas party that the hospital gave for the patients every year. Mom was with the other lady, who was a Red Cross representative (and who also knew about our surprise) and they were preparing punch, cookies and such, There were some patients already in the recreation room (evidently, the Red Cross representative, who was also a good friend of my mom’s as well, had passed the word on to them about our surprise, because no one said a word). I could hear mom telling the other lady how much she missed her “Bon Bon” (my nickname since I was three years old…lol!) All of a sudden, some of the patients (who were really nice guys) started to sing “I’l be home for Christmas.” I quietly tiptoed into the back room and gave mom a BIG hug. Boy, was she ever surprised and happy. And of course, she started to cry happy tears. Plus, she told me to NEVER do that to her again!! Those are some of the nice memories that I have of my mom and I. I think that mom may be either tired or busy at the moment, because I have not had any dreams of her lately…lol!

Talking about our late neighbor, he was a very good person. His name was Norman. He was 80 years old. His mom just passed on at the age of 101 not too long after him. But, I think that he’s settled in Heaven, now. That’s how I always look at things.

How are you feeling? How’s your mom, your sis and your hubby doing? KTM, you take care, and a BIG hug to you, Sweetie! As always, it’s wonderful talking to you.

    Hi,

Thank you to everyone for their wonderful comments. Merideth, nothing else happened in our house, after my husband told our neighbor to stop it and leave us alone. I also think that maybe that could have been our imagination working on us. The mind can play alot of tricks on people. But, I honestly think that it was our late neighbor just saying hi and seeing how we’re doing. When he was in the hospital, he had gone into a coma. My husband and I went to visit him and see his wife. I went up to him and said that we were here for him and that we would take care of his wife and son. I think that he’s at peace now. As for having someone come to our house, no, we found no need to have that done. Thank you for your nice comment and have a great weekend :)

hey bonnie your story sure gives you something to think about thanks and hello out there its still touch and go and of coarse the rumors are flying. mark is stable but not out of the woods just yet. the main problem is mark’st girlfriend has been telling all of whats going on to a family member who is unfortunately not well liked. and that has left the rest of us hanging including dear mom who has been so worried. anyway thanks for a sad but nice post.

  10. Manik says:

Hi BON BON Its nice when our loved ones come back to see us, atleast to me. I had tears in my eyes coz i hadn’t been so much happy like everyone here with their mothers! I wish i had my mother back! BUT I am glad that you all are happy unlike me its gods gift to me and to you all.

  11. Bonnie says:

    Hi KTM,

Thank you, you’re a pretty special person yourself, Sweeetie. Your mom is a special and wonderful lady as well. I’m so glad that you were able to walk up to the lunchroom and surprise your mom. I know that made your mom very happy, and I can just see the beautiful smile on her face when she saw you.

KTM, you’re absolutely right, your dad and daughter, and my mom, dad and brother are in a safe, wonderful, and beautiful place where they will always be happy, away from danger, and no longer in pain. I agree with you too, that this time of year in Heaven is pretty busy. I always like to imagine my mom shopping with her sister, who’s up in Heaven as well, dancing with my dad, and enjoying the Mardi Gras (she was born and raised in New Orleans). I guess that sounds a little silly. But, that’s how I picture it in my mind and see them in my heart.

KTM, you take care of yourself, Sweetie. You’re in my prayers each day. Have a great weekend! Gosh, I can’t believe that it’s almost Thanksgiving, and Christmas again!!! I just love this time of year.

BIG Hugs to you and your mom!
    Bonnie :)

thanks bon, he’s my boyfriends brother. he’s being detoxed now, he had surgery and i thinks they will keep him awhile longer. the man was just plain pickeled in alcohol! his girlfriend told me that he kept refusing to go to the doc. this has been going on for months and noone knew except his girlfriend. he is in such denial and would rather have the beer and booze that he kept working thru the pain. he’s a roofer and they all drink. even on the job. his boss just has 5 polyps removed. no cancer. but he doesn’t know how to be with out it. sad that there are so many out there like that. i’m sure if he starts to drink again he will die very quickly. his choice. anywho thanks to all who thought of us during a rather frustrating time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

  18. KNOWTOMUCH says:

Hi Trolldoll,,,,wow,, that was a close call.. im glad that he made it through.. i just hope that he stays away from the stuff,, but,, alcohol is a demon in itself…. very hard to give up…been thinking about ya…..

    God bless you,,,, ktm

  19. Bonnie says:

    Hi Trolldoll,

I’m so glad that your boyfriend’s brother is doing better. That’s good that the doctor will keep him a little longer. Like you said, it’s his choice. I hope that he makes the right one. Anyway, he’s very lucky to have his brother (your boyfriend) and you there for him. You’re one of God’s special Angels. You take care.

  23. Manik says:

    You are always welcome, Trolldoll!@!@!

  24. BEaAnn09 says:

whoa that pretty scary story huh i lve spook :D

P.S I beilive in ghost but not demon or witch or monster or any thing else

  25. Manik says:

To BAaAnn09 how come? You believe ghosts but you don’t believe other things!

    • BEaAnn09 says:

i don’t really believe in them, but once i read other story that someone think that they seen devil so i possible believe in them and hoping that god and angel and guardian angel is real so i can be safe from devil, what do u think

  26. KC says:

Manik says a whole lot by saying so little! How is it that so many folks believe in God & “good” but deny the devil & demons. Let us hope that BEaAnn09 & everyone else never knows the bad. I also get a bit twisted about how many religions will speak of angels & spirits, but when you speak to the church about spirits in your life; they treat you like a kook! : / As for Bonnie’s story; I had an awesome neighbor Claire who I had gotten very chummy with. While I was only 25 & she was in her early 80s when we first moved here, we were quite fond of each other & loved spending time together. As time went on & she grew older, I took for ganted that she would not always be there to share time & when she became ill & was on home hospice care, I just couldn’t bare to see her more than the one visit. When she passed away, I didn’t need anyone to tell me because she had come to me in a dream & said her farewell. I’d even seen her in her house as it was vacant & once after the new family moved in. I’ll often still pick my 1st red tomato & leave it as a sort of offering to her memory because she went nuts for homegrow tomatoes & was always asking: “got any ripe ones yet?” This story rekindled warm, fond memories. Thanks for that.
    KC

  27. Bonnie says:

    Hi KC,

That’s a nice gesture that you leave the first ripe tomatoe at your late friend’s house in her memory and respect for her. I can tell that you were a good friend and special person to Claire, and she will always love you for that.

    Bonnie

  28. KNOWTOMUCH says:

KC,,,, very good post hun,, you are so right,,,, it would be nice to be able to go to church and talk about the paranormal,,, but,, like you said,, people might think you are a kook…it seems that, church would be the place to go to talk about this sort of thing…

my sis is a decon in her church,, nothing like this is ever talked about!!!! but,, she does talk to me,, one on one,, she knows all about the paranormal also, but tries to stay away from it, as she sees what it has done to me… she always tells me,, ktm, you have always been this way, even as a child…. i really dont think she could handle the type things that i go through,, but,, i am used to it….

i loved your story about your elderly neighbor.. how wonderful…. you trully have a wonderful heart and soul… im sure that your nieghbor will visit you on a regular basis, and you will always enjoy her company…. especially when those tomatoes are ripe and ready to pick.. she will be right there with you!!!!

    God Bless you,,,, ktm
