The Monks of Lilleshall

The beautiful ruins of Lilleshall Abbey sit lonely and unheralded at the end of a farm track, tucked away in an unexpected, sleepy corner of the Shropshire countryside. The decaying walls of the Abbey are shielded from the nearby road by a line of trees and feel distinctly isolated and sheltered from the outside world.

Stand at the centre of this imposing structure and breathe in the atmosphere; touch the cold, lichen-covered walls and journey through time to a darker, less enlightened age.

It was a miserable day to arrive at Lilleshall: the sky was a thick mass of angry cloud; the wind had whipped up and drove channels through the grass way; and the rain was beating heavily, running as fierce torrents across the ancient grey stone. I had parked the car in a neighbouring layby, just in case the approach proved too small and busy; why I don’t know – anyone else would have turned back in this …

The Ghost at the End of My Bed

It all started when I was 8 years old in an old Victorian house, England. I had always had strong beliefs in the afterlife and ghost, etc. So, when I was going to bed I heard a moan, and I knew it wasn’t my mother because she was downstairs and this sound came from my room (although it sounded distant at the same time…) and it wasn’t my father or a sibling because I was an only child and my father was doing a late shift. I thought of it as nothing and I went to sleep.

The next night when I went to bed, just as I lay down, even though my door was shut and my windows were closed (I remember checking) my curtains flared up and went flying! I yelped and ran downstairs and insisted on sleeping in the same bed as my mother and father. My father had to fix my curtains and blamed me for …

The Shadow Under the Bed

When I was two my dad was told his job would be taking him from California to England. My mom was so excited, and couldn’t wait for me and my older brother to experience something no one else in our family had. Me being two and my brother five however, dad wasn’t sure we’d get much out of it.

For the first year and a half we’d lived in a small house out in the British country side. However, My dad decided we needed someplace bigger, as I now had a baby brother on the way. He found the House for rent, a huge brick two-story house, to this day the largest house I lived in.

Mom said it was fairly normal when we first moved in. The sounds heard through the house nothing more than the heavy building shifting and settling. Just before my brother was born, however, things she says she couldn’t explain started happening.

It was small …

My Brother and The Ghostly Monks

I know that it is a common thing to be said in ghost stories ‘I don’t believe in ghosts’ I guess it’s to try and make them more believable. In this case it was when my younger brother started seeing them… I guess that’s when I started to believe.

I live in the North West of England. My house happens to be a 10 minute walk from the Norton Priory Museum, which is built around the grounds of an old Monastery. This was where all the monks were slaughtered around the time that Henry IV ruled. This was the key bit of information that leads me to believing in such thing as ghosts.

My younger brother was around the age of 4 at the time, myself at the age of 6. It first started when my baby bother didn’t want to tidy his room on his own, he threw tantrums and on one occasion he even tried to run away …

Haunted Flats on Sheffield England Church Cemetery

I have read most of the stories on here and I have been absolutely fascinated with them as they are all different in there own way… most are based in the U.S.A… but I would like to tell you a story of my own…

I live in a place called Sheffield in England U.K, and when I was 18 years old I was offered my own 1 bedroom flat by the city council, it was a newly built complex maybe about 15-20 years old. I met my boyfriend roughly about 4 months before I had the flat who is now my husband of 10 lovely years.

I will describe the flat briefly so you can get a good picture of the lay out, as you walked in the front door straight ahead was the kitchen and living area which was separated by a breakfast bar to the right was a long hallway which led to the bathroom and bedroom. On …

Knowing Something Without Learning

I never really believed in ghosts, spirits, demons etc. But once you have have experienced something like I did, everything and anything is possible.

When you read on you have to believe every word, I’m not a person who tells lies, not with a tale like this, i wouldn’t want to go through the pain of imagining something like this. So it’s 100% true, and I’ve finally come to let it out.

It was September 1st and it was my first day back at school now starting year 7. I went to a rural type of school founded in the late 1800s in the country regions of England. The buildings where old and damp with the bricks breaking away. Most of it was safe to wonder around, but on the early morning of school, all 450 students where called into the huge hall with a message from our head. “students” he said “I’m sure most of you have already heard …

16C Cottage in England

I have seen a figure in my house and experience other things which I believe could be related to him. I have seen the figure clear as day light.

My cottage dates back to the 16C. I believe the man to be the owner of the old windmill up the road where all the grain would be stored in the barn part of my house. The man would stand at the entrance from the extension connecting to the barn part. He is approximately 6 feet white wears a long black draped coat with the collar up and an old fashioned hat. He looks straight at me between the collar and the hat. He would then stare until I looked away and looked again which he would be gone. I have seen him around 5 times.

When I moved into the cottage my bedroom is in the 16C cottage itself which is joined to the barn via the extension. As I …

Haunted House in Birmingham

I arrived in Birmingham, England in Sept. ’89 to attend college there. For the first few months I stayed with a lady and her three kids in an older 3 floor house in one of the suburbs.

One afternoon, when classes were finished early, I got home before anybody else. I went to the kitchen to have a snack but felt increasingly restless. I was uncomfortable in the house after a short while and was feeling a little spooked. I thought I had just imagined noises in the hallway outside the kitchen door which led to the front door. The family dog too was looking towards the door to the hallway and whining continuously.

I eventually gave up and went out the back door to the garden, bringing my sandwich with me (the dog was happy to accompany me). The whole time I was outside I was compelled to look at the window of the small room facing the back. …

Family Affair Haunting in England

I live in a lovely little house in Stoke-on-Trent, England. We live in the suburbs, in a quaint little 3 bedroom house, which me and my family believes is haunted. By 3 entities; for instance, when I was 7 my dad had told me off for breaking the living room table. I ran upstairs crying and I jumped on my bed, head buried in the pillow. I heard a little girls voice say, ‘What’s wrong?’ I was terrified, but intrigued. As the years went by I was more an more interested in this little girl, who I’d nicknamed ‘Roxy.’

Secondly, during the winter of ’04 I was down stairs on my own, mum was upstairs putting clothes away she’d just ironed, dad works nights, so was at work. I was writing Christmas cards to school friends when I heard a single faint knock on the door, so I lifted my head. And by the door we have a large mirror, …

Sleep Paralysis and the Black figure

Hi, my name is Laura, I’m 18 and live in England and I just wanted to share my experience of sleep paralysis.

Basically I’d been lying in bed just ‘nodding’ as it were, it was morning around 8 am and at that time I’d been practicing going into lucid dreams a lot but only being successful a couple of times.

So I ended up falling into lucidness only to get excited and ‘wake up’ from it and going into sleep paralysis. I remember seeing my room completely as it was, one of my curtains open, one shut so I get some light only it was blurry, then I realized I couldn’t move a muscle and naturally I began to panic. As I was still staring straight ahead I saw a huge black figure standing over me, I could feel it was evil and it hated me. It hated everything about the living. I continued to stare at it when I …

Unhappy Grandmother?

Please bare with me on this, I am new to the art of story writing and more than a little bit nervous about writing some of these things down…from the stories I have read, people seem to be friendly and helpful so I thought I’d give it a go!

I recently turned 23, I live in a small village in England (UK) with my boyfriend of 5 years and our daughter who recently turned 2.

Firstly I would like to say that I am not a great believer in anything, I’m not religious or especially prone to the belief in ghosts etc, but I have nothing against people who do believe and would never call anyone a liar, it’s just I have always thought of myself as someone who would believe it when I saw it…until a few years ago…

I’ve always been very interested in the paranormal, I enjoy reading ghost stories and looking up ghost photos on-line as …
