My brother used to baby-sit a couple of kids in our apartment building on Sherman Way, North Hollywood, California when I was about eight years old.
One sunny mid-summer day we were at the neighbors apartment. My brother was babysitting us all, and we had to clean up our mess we made in the bedroom. When we opened the closet to put his toys away there was a woman in the closet looking at us. She never said anything, just looked at each of us with a very sad look on her face.
We did not at first realize it was a ghost until we saw two things, 1) she was floating, and 2) she had a hole in her forehead. Needless to say that we screamed and ran like fiends out of there!
Fast Forward to 11 years later – I was talking to the Apartment Building Super (she was about to move after 25 years), and I asked her if she had ever found any dead bodies there. (The building had once been a Motel).
She started to tell me about a woman that was depressed. She and her husband were separated. She lived in the building with their son, and he with his new girlfriend. Well, one day the husband showed up to get their son for his weekend visit, and he handed her divorce papers while telling her that his girlfriend was pregnant.
After he and their son left, she crawled into the vacant apartment behind her and shot herself in the head in the closet! (This would later be the same closet my friend and I saw her in when he was living there!).
I described the woman to the Super in great detail, because I never forgot her lovely sad face. When the building Super showed me a photo of the woman taken earlier in the day (the same day she killed herself) I was quick to point her out.
I can still see her face and clothes to this day if I close my eyes. Black shoulder length hair with bangs, white headband, large almond shaped brown eyes, and black eyeliner. She was wearing s white sleeveless mock turtle-neck blouse, and blue and white gingham snug-fit capri pants, and plain white shoes, similar to Keds – no laces.
This building had been torn down a few years ago, and a new building is in it’s place. I wonder if anyone else has seen her. No one ever rented that apartment after my neighbor moved out. I hope she has found her peace.
