Strange Things in the House Where I Grew up

Posted on December 3, 2009

Now a lot of this is second hand as I was only four of five years old at the most when a lot of these things happened, and I am now 30. These are mostly the stories of my mom and sisters as they were older then me and would of a much better memory of things happening. These things all happened in the house we grew up in Michigan.

I should probably give a little back ground information about my Mother, as I think she probably was the key to letting a lot of these thing happen. My mother was always one who loved horror – horror books, horror movies, ghosts, ghost stories, and so one. One time she even told my Dad (his words) “That she sold her soul to the devil for a quarter”.

Anyway, there were many stories of strange things happening in that house. It started with random happenings like with any basic haunting. Lights going on and off in the night. The TV going on and off in the night. All of my family members said they used to hear foot steps walking down into the basement, but never coming up again in the middle of the night. Also, many of the family members had mentions that my father used to have this old black flute which was just a black metal tube with holes in it…. and they used to hear that playing at night as well.

I was to young to recall any of this, but I do remember being absolutely terrified of the basement. We had a large German Shepherd Doge as well, who was very obedient, especially to my dad. That dog would NOT go into the basement under any circumstance. When my dad would go down there, he would try to get the dog to go down, but the dog would become so stubborn and just plant his feet. Would not budge, even with pulling him.

Then things progressed. I will go through each family members experience.

My mom was sitting on the sofa one day, and heard something. She got up to turn around and saw a young girl in a long white night gown walk into the bathroom and heard the shower turn on. She was worried that it was one of us girls getting up from bed, and so walked in to check on us. When she got into the bathroom the bathroom was empty (only one door in and out) but the shower was on.

One of my sisters:

One of my sisters was sitting at the kitchen table one morning eating her cereal. She saw a man walking toward the screen door in a suit. She though nothing of it, and though it was just a sales man. That was until the man went through the screen door, and when he got through the door it was only the upper part of his body. She said he had no legs. She ran out of the room screaming.

A second occurrence happened to her. She said she was lying in bed one night when something hit her really hard through her pillow. Like it was coming right up through the bed.

My oldest sister:

My oldest sister said she saw my imaginary friend. When I lived in that house I had an imaginary friend called “apple”. I used to play with him every day. No one was worried as it was completely normal for a young child to have an imaginary friend. If someone asked me what he looked like I would describe him as “a pink dragon, with long nails, and sharp teeth”. My family would ask me where he lived and I always answered that he lived in the attic. I was never scared of him, because he was my friend.

Anyway, my oldest sister said one night she was walking by the room me and my other sister shared, and she saw me curled up in bed sleeping. Next to me was another figure sleeping. Something dark that she could quite make out. The one thing she said she did remember was that it had long claws, which it was resting right over my throat? She completely freaked and ran into her room and didn’t say anything. She didn’t tell me she saw anything until years later when we were grown up. So it wasn’t an older sister just trying to terrify her younger sister. I don’t think she would make something up all those years later?

Anyway, Once we left that house my imaginary friend disappeared. WE moved to another state and my family used to ask me all the time about my imaginary friend, do I still play with him.  I would say “NO, he lived at the other house in the attic. So I do not see him anymore”.

Myself:

The only real thing I remember from living in that house, beside my imaginary friend — was a re occurring dream I used to have that stopped once I left that house. I remember it was a dream I had almost every night as  a child. I would be sleeping in bed, then I would get up and go to my closet. In the closet there was this large yellow metal shield. I would move the shield away to reveal a hole in the wall. Through the hole there were stairs leading down. Down the stairs there was fire, and in the fire there was a washing and a drying, and my mother was down there doing the laundry in the fire. But I could never get to her. The dream terrified me, and I would often end up crying. But once we moved from that house the dreams stopped.

I still wonder about my mothers part in all this. I love my mother as she is my mom, but still I can not help but wonder? My mom and dad divorced when I was 13. About this time we all decided to make changes in our lives, and start going to church. My mother absolutely refused. She refused to go to church, believe in god. While our lives have gotten better, hers has only gotten worse. She has become weak, and frail. Her body is so thin. She is now an alcoholic, does some drugs. And she is just so sad. I really wonder if she had given herself over to something and now she regrets it.

Since then nothing out of the normal has ever happened to my family again. I now feel completely comfortable in whatever house we live, and never get that chilling feeling that makes you run quickly from a room, just to be around another living creature for comfort.

I guess there was a few odd experiences even after leaving that house. At the new house, whenever we would enter any of what we called the back bedroom or back bathroom chills would just run through your body, and leave you completely cold. Your body would be taken over with fear, and you would run from the room so fast as if something was trying to kill you. Also at night we would hear strange sounds from the back bathroom – as if a cat was batting around a bottle top on the floor. “Or at least that is what I would tell myself” but often in the mornings I would get up first thing to check, and the door would be closed.

I guess the strangest thing in the new house was on Halloween we had this tape of scary noises. There was this one part where a lady would scream. We were listening to it in the kitchen and when it reached that part, one of the bedroom doors slammed shut. I thought it was my sister. So I went and check the door. There was no one in the bedroom. No strings attached to the door. I checked the whole door over as it was so weird. Every time we re played the tape at that exact time when the lady screamed the door would slam shut.

But since the divorce and since my mother moved out, nothing weird has ever happened, and our lives have been at peace.

thats so sad about your mom, she has lost her faith and one could suppose it was the divorce that did it. as for that house yep it sounds haunted. try to support your mother as best as possible and maybe she’ll come around and seek help, i really hope she does. thanks peanutbutter!!:)

This story is really interesting and compelling. I also hope your mom is going to be okay. I really think that the pink dragon imaginary friend was linked to that house. Your sister said it was sleeping next to you with it’s claws at your throat? It could have just fell asleep like that and it seemed to not hurt you or anyone else in the family so that is good.unless there is something else that you aren’t telling us.Been good.

peanutbutter, that was all very interesting. You have lived with a lot of paranormal activity!! I really hope the you Mom gets bettter, that just breaks my heart.. i will keep you guys in my prayers… ktm

Thanks for all your kind words. I pray for my mother every day. Recently her father passed away, after that my mother came into some money from an inheritance. She has been making some positive changes in her life since then. She has a little house now at least to leave in. She used to live in a motel room. I just hope that her life continues to pick up.

Yeah, My friend apple never did anything bad. If it was a ghost I honestly don’t think it would of done anything to hurt me. I can not remember being told any stories of anyone being physically hurt in the house. No bumps, no pushing, no scratches, nothing along those lines.

MY oldest sister did say once she heard something growl at her loud from our bedroom. She ran and locked herself in her room, never went to investigate it. But she swore it was much to loud to be one of the cats. And we had some pretty meek cats at the time. The quiet purring type.

    I guess I will also mention….

my uncle has lived in that house since we have moved out. HE has never mentioned anything about the house since we left. TO be honest though he is the hermit type. Just sorta stays to himself, doesn’t like alot of people stopping around. Just sorta shuts himself in.

The few times we have stopped around to visit though, you wouldn’t be able to get me into that basement if my life depended on it. NO WAY!!!!!!!

Peanutbutter, i read your post again, as i often do, that was and may still be a very active house.. i just wonder what your uncle has to put up with?? It sounds like your mom is doing better, i thank God for that… hopefully, she will continue to get better. i will keep all of you in my prayers hun… Moms are very special,, my mom is my best friend.

    take care hun,,,, ktm

hi peanutbutter, the thing about cats and their ability to growl is often misunderstood. i have a large black and white female. she has the tiniest little meow. and you can barely tell she’s purring. but i have heard her growl. it is very deep and very loud. so don’t underestimate your cats. if something threatens them they will let it know!!!!!

I live in Michigan too! What city was this house in? I love stories like yours because some of the things you said wouldn’t be easy to make up. Sounds legit to me!

peanutbutter, (now there is a name you can’t forget!)

There was another reader here (young lady) that said she made multiple attempts to sell her soul to the devil…, she wanted to be beautiful, have lots of friends, and other things. She was worried that her soul did in fact belong to devil. I tried to persuade her that she hadn’t.

I believe that our soul is something we can “give” to a higher power, by the way we live. People wreck their lives all the time, and many find God in the process. I seriously doubt that God would take “selling your soul” seriously. If we seek God, we will find him. He will lead us, He will heal us, and He will protect us. Maybe your mother needs to hear this. I’m no minister. I’m not sure I understand the message your father was giving you when he told you that story about your mother. I hope a lot of readers here are saying a prayer for her…, and you too.

    Hi Peanut Butter,

I hope that your mom gets better and seeks the help that she needs. She was blessed with a beautiful family, and I know that you and your siblings would give anything to have your mom back in your lives again. You hang in there, Sweetie. I’m glad that things have gotten better for you and your family.

    Bonnie :)
