Push In Your Chair

Posted on April 16, 2009

When I was in my mid twenties, I lived alone in a small apartment in a converted duplex built in the early 1800′s.  My boyfriend lived about 30 miles away and often stayed with me on the weekends.  Because I lived alone, I was very annoyed by the fact that he would never push in his chair when he left the kitchen table.  My Kitchen was small and it was hard to get around it when any of the chairs were left out.

One night when my boyfriend was staying over, about four o’clock in the morning, we heard a loud bumping/crashing noise that woke us both up immediately.  We were frightened but decided to go out to the kitchen/living room area to investigate.

We walked through the kitchen into the living room and noticed nothing unusual.  We checked outside and found nothing.  As we were feeling silly and on our way back to bed, we both stopped dead in our tracks in the kitchen, because the table was moved from it’s original position and was in a diagonal position.

At first we thought that my cat had somehow bumped it out of position, until we noticed that all four chairs were still neatly tucked into place around the table.  This completely freaked us out. We tried several different times to move the table and keep the chairs in place, but we could never do it.

We never told anyone about this event, but talked about it between us for a few months.  Then, one day the landlord stopped by to tell me that he was going to have a new roof put on the building.  He told me that he was having a lot of trouble finding a company willing to do the roof, because it was a three story house with a very peaked roof.  Then he told me that the last guy he hired died on the roof.

This made me very interested so I asked him to tell me more.  He said that the man had showed up to work on the house at about four in the morning, and, after climbing the ladders to the roof, suffered cardiac arrest.  The landlord said that because it was still dark out, no one saw him and no one would have heard him calling for help.

Was this a strange coincidence?  We’ll never really know.

Wow! Well, that poor mans spirit is still there! Unless anyhting worse happens I’d try to find a way to live with it… if it gets to bothering you too much put up religious objects around your apartment or have a local minister or priest bless the apartment….
