When I was very young, I had a friend named George only I could see. My mother and father knew I had an invisible friend and didn’t worry too much about it. My father said once that I’d grow out of it. I never cared that I was the only person who could see George either. He was as real to me as anyone I have ever met.
George was a child about the same age as me. He had red hair, blue eyes, and freckles. I never knew his last name. I don’t suppose I ever asked. I don’t remember him dressing strangely or wearing the same thing all of the time. I don’t remember him ever eating anything but know he drank water from of our garden hose at least once. I have no idea where he ‘lived’ or where he went when he wasn’t with me. I can’t remember when I first met him. It just seemed like I had always known him.
Sometimes he just showed up when I was at the creek fishing or swimming. Sometimes he appeared inside my house. We played football and climbed trees together. Often George would come to school with me. I do recall times when I wanted to see him and looked for him in the places we went together without finding him.
The strangest thing about George is that he always told me things that I couldn’t possibly have known or figured out on my own. I never remember him being wrong about any of it either. Mostly he gave me information when I needed it- like when the teacher would ask a question I couldn’t answer, or when a particular plant was poisonous. He also told me who was about to call before the phone rang or when my sister, who had moved to another state, would next come to visit.
Once I got a bad cold that never seemed to get better. George told me not to worry. He said they’d have to do an operation and that I’d have to drink a lot of Gatorade afterward to recover. I told all this to my parents and recall that they had a good laugh about it.
It turned out the doctor wanted to remove my tonsils and scheduled a surgery. Afterward, the doctor told my mother to make certain that I drink a lot of Gatorade to keep my fluid levels up. My mom at least halfway believed in George after that. My dad said it was all just a coincidence.
After a while, my mom asked me to ask George some questions for her. One I remember particularly was for George to describe the house where she had grown up in London, which I later learned had been destroyed by bombing during the Second World War. He did that accurately apparently, as well as the house that one of her brothers had just purchased, though at the time neither my mother nor I knew that my uncle had bought a new house.
Not long after that, George just stopped coming to visit. Oddly, when a new family moved into the house next door, the only child looked enough like George to be his twin brother. He and I became fast and life-long friends. No, his name isn’t George.
Today, I don’t know what George was. I do know that I was never afraid of him, nor did any of his advice ever steer me wrong. As far as I can figure he was my frequent companion/guardian from the time I was born until I was about eight years of age. I might be here today still had I never known George, but doubt I’d have such an intense sense of well-being and wonderment.
So, thank you George, old friend. Wherever you came from and wherever you went, you’re always here in my heart.

I enjoyed reading about your imaginary friend. But I suspect he is your spirit guide and he is still with you.
Oh that was so nice, I believe you was your Guardian Angel and probably still watches over you when you least expect it, that was so nice do you ever wonder what happen? or have you ever called his name and ask to move something so you know he’s still around? Angel’s are around us all the time
he could be your guardian angel and he chose to let you see him. And he stopped coming because he was called to heaven or if he was a ghost he could have found the light
you are so lucky to have something so good in your life
Sounds a little my My “Friend” He’s not imaginary, i’m the only person I know who can see him, but i’ve found out that people who are psychic can see him slighlty. My Councellor who has great intuition and is into Herbs and Stones, she too can feel his energy, and she told me once that he knew he was there, she just couldnt see him. He snuck up on My Grandma once and said “Boo” but didnt say it to scare her, she was the only one in the Kitchen, the tv wasnt on, neither was the raidio. She told me about it, she said that someone got right next to her and calmly/gently said “Boo” but no one was there. He has also told me things that i questioned, but later-on it turned out he was right. He’s NOT A spirit-Guide either. Everyone else seems to think he’s my Guardian-Angel.

I WONDER WHO WAS GEORGE MAYBE HE WAS THERE TO GUYED U N STUFF…. BUT THEN THE BOI DAT LOOKED LIKE HIM DAT WAS WIERD BUT KEWLL
that is such a cool story to me to be honest. I didn think that IMAGINARY friends were real..but in this case he sounds more like a guardian or someone is always watching out for you and telling you stuff to help you out…he seemed like he was really special..
sorry you lost him…but he is prolly still with you whether you realize it or not..
Thanks to all who left comments. While I like the theories some of you raised, I always kind of hoped that George left me to befriend some other child who might have needed him more than I did.
This is a classic example of the innocence of children interacting with a paranormal event. Your parents handled it very well!
Of course TV and movies these days have poor parents believing half the time
‘ imaginary friends ‘ are some demonic entity out to posess their child! 9 times out of 10 the kids are fine with it…..its the parents with an over active imagination who have the problem!
This is such a lovely and positive example of how such a relationship can play out ; be it a guardian angel, spirit guide or ghost. Subsequently, relatives who have passed ; even ones you didnt know, can appear quite youthful and assign themselves the position of
‘ guardian’ particularly where children are concerned.
Children are such open books and often interpret paranormal events……as completely normal….. until an adult or parent ‘ teaches’ them fear.
Its lovely this experience got to play out to its conclusion.
