My Childhood Fear

Posted on August 9, 2009

My story begins many years ago as a young boy of about seven or eight. For some reason my family always gave my baby sister dolls. Not the small Barbie type dolls, but the larger dolls that were about the size of a toddler complete with clothing and eyes that would open and close if laid on their backs. They were always quite eerie to me!

I came from a poor catholic family and we lived in a small home so my mother, father and sister shared a room along with my sister in her crib. I had my own closet sized bedroom. To show appreciation of the dolls my sister was given, they were hung around the perimeter of my bedroom. Needless to say I hated this, but what could I say? Maybe it was me, but the eyes of the dolls always seemed to follow me no matter what I did and an eeriness not only from the eyes but as if something kept bumping me lightly.

I complained to my mother a few times of the discomfort I felt from the dolls, but she insisted that it was my imagination. Often times I was told to play in my room and so I did so with those peering eyes following me. Then it began to happen! One of the dolls that also contained a voice box began to speak on it’s own saying “Mama”. It would do it without notice and only when I was alone in my room and frighten me. Sometimes it did this even at night while I lay in my bed. I asked my parents why this would happen but it always came back to the fact that they were “just getting old”.

One night as I slept I was awakened to the sounds of “Ma…maaaaa”. It was distorted in a horrific way and moments later the doll which was nailed on the wall next to my bed fell! I tried not to scream or cry since I knew my parents would be upset. I hid under my covers and peeked out from under. That’s when I saw something extremely odd. The doll was still saying “Ma…maaaa” and rolled to it’s side possibly from the mouth movement against the floor but who’s to say. As it flipped to it’s side I saw what appeared to be a black shadow move from the doll and up the wall. I would say it was the dolls shadow caused by an oncoming car or something of the sort, but it was a dark night, no moonlight and no cars were on the road! The shadow seemed to elongate against the wall to the size of a full size man or woman! A few seconds later the shadow seemed to tilt along the wall and towards my bed. I immediately covered my head under the blankets but felt an awesome force which seemed to take my breath away almost as if I were being smothered! I knew I would get into trouble but I screamed and my mother ran into the room to quiet me so that my father would not wake up. In tears I explained to her what just happened. I saw the doubt in her eyes, but something made her stay with me. With the comfort of my mother next to me… I was able to fall asleep soon after.

The next day my Mother told me that we had to see a priest immediately. I asked her why and she would not say. Within a day our parish priest had come to bless our home.

Advance in time to two years ago being 2007. I find a picture of my old room with the dolls hanging as I always remembered and showed it to her. She gave an odd look and said to me, “do you remember that night?” but I acted ignorant and asked her what she meant. She described the night of the doll falling and my scream. She told me that shortly after I had fallen asleep… there was a dark shadow on the wall which didn’t seem to belong. When this shadow seemed to appear the eyes of the dolls all seemed to converge on her. Then the shadow seemed to have moved with no reason and she felt as if something had been trying to smother her! It only stopped when she turned on the light and held me next to her! This is what prompted her to see the priest to help us. I always remembered that night, but for my mother to recount this experience just frightens me even now!
