This is a story well known within my family, it happened 14 years ago now so definitely time to share.
On 24th Dec 1995 my mum passed away (she had blood poisoning). I felt as though my world had ended, mum was my best friend and her death was sudden, I was 18 at the time.
The day of mum’s funeral is still a bit of a blur on the whole but the following stands out for obvious reasons. I wore mums favourite earings on the day of the funeral. Now we left from mums house to the church, then to the memorial function at our local centre.
As I was upset I went with my dad and his wife and kids back to their house. I fell asleep on their couch. After about two hours my sister Laura woke me up to ask if I would eat anything. The first thing she noticed was that one earing was missing. This caused major upset and dad’s couch was taken apart to find it, with no luck. After many hours of all five of us searching we had to admit defeat.
Dad took me back to mum’s to collect a few things as I didn’t want to sleep there without mum. Dad close behind I put my bits and pieces together. For whatever reason, maybe mum whispering, I lifted my pillow on my bed and there was mum’s missing earing. To say I was shocked is an understatement. Dad and I both cried, and the other family members were just as stumped. I always recall this time as proof that Mum never went far, she’s just unseen for now but always near.
