There were some rather queer happenings in the neighborhood of my home town. Well, there still are. It was built at an old war-site of some sort. I’m not very clear, but the happenings are definitely linked to this. It is a charming and peaceful neighbor hood and must be more than about a 100 years. It has gone through a few renovations. Well moving onto the actual story now that you must have an idea.
Our house is old and large,is two stories high and has a terrace above. It is rather mysterious. On the second story which isn’t inhabited, a very demonic and frightening presence is felt – maybe because it is lonely. The ground floor is inhabited by my grandparents. My Mum, Dad, Brother and I used to live on the second story but soon shifted out and whenever we visited – we occupied that.
At night my brother and I used to stay up late – while my Mother and Father would already be sleeping. Many a times we would here noises like someone whispering or a knock on the bedroom door (We would lock the stairway door so it definitely couldn’t be our grandparents). We’d let it be and try to catch some sleep. Now my grandparents have been living there for about 32 years. The history of the house before that has remained in the shadows.
One night my parents took some guests out to dinner. Everybody except my Grandma and I had gone. Grandma retired to her room to do her crossword after giving me some dinner and left me on the hall couch to watch some TV. I took to watching AXN.About an hour later – I wasn’t really aware as I was so engrossed in watching TV – the bell rang. I supposed that it was my parents – back from dinner after dropping the guests.
It was late and dark. I went to the foyer – adjacent to another hall. I opened the door to the porch and looked through the porch gate. No one. I walked up to the porch gate and looked to the main gate – no one. I thought that there could be two possibilities: 1)The outhouse boys – my friends – pranking me… 2)The back gate. I walked to the back gate – unsuccessful at finding anyone/thing… and the outhouse was asleep (the lights were off), and the door had been locked from inside – you could tell by the way it was shut tight – usually it would creak open if not locked. And nobody would have dared to do that anyway – for my grandma was a no nonsense taker – but a fun soul. I locked the doors and went back to watching TV. Grandma was fast asleep.
As soon as I was nicely tucked in and all comfy – back to watching my show, the bell rang again. This time Grandma woke up. She asked me to go and check. I went up to the door and this time peeped through the peeping hole. Not a soul. Even the stray dogs were quiet. Only the crickets kept up their chirpy tune – which made me feel less scared. This second time – was when I thought about ghosts.
I told Grandma about this and the previous incident. Her first words were ‘How can it be?’ Suddenly her expression changed from sarcastic to serious. ‘Sam, are you thinking of…’ She broke off there. ‘Grandma – ghosts?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Don’t worry darling… just switch off the TV and come and lie down. Your parents will be back home soon.’ ‘But how will I tell whether the bell is of them or… the… ghost?’ ‘Oh-we’ll check from my room window.’
The window looks into the garden and partially captures the porch gate and captures the entire main gate. I switched everything off and lay down next to her. I was pretty scared. Things from here are a blur – I slept off… the next thing I remember is waking up to the sound of the bell – frightened and Grandma walking to the window, looking through. he heaved a great sigh. She explained to me that my parents were home. The next morning we narrated the whole incident to the rest of my family – much to their disbelief. They thought that we were cooking the whole thing up!
After this many queer incidents have taken place – increasing by the number – not only in the house but the whole neighborhood. People are very superstitious and whenever crossing a claimed ‘haunted’ house – (usually where some Major or ex-army man has died) start acting very freaky… making me laugh.
After this incident I realized that my Grandma is a superstitious person too – even though she is quite a modern being and she even opened up to the happenings in her own household dating back to the 1940s and 50′s. I started really enjoying them, taking much interest, perishing my scare for ghosts.
I have much more and have a whole potato sack of happenings and sightings – most coming from my Grandma’s experiences than my own, and I’d love to share them – based on the reviews for this. (the others are pretty scary!)
Please comment, and tell me about what other possibilities the bell ringing could be! (It can’t be a mechanical defect-and that’s for sure).

Thank you Fenwinkel,Anna,Nana and Tina…lol.Yes I will share more stories but that will take some time. And Anna-thank you for your honest review, next time ill make sure to get to the point!
Anna,To your question about the being of a hoodoo:
1)Hoodoo is a form of African-American traditional folk magic. Also known as conjure, it is a tradition of magical practice that developed from the combining of a number of separate cultures and magical traditions.
It can also be referred to as: spell or potion, but it may also be used as an adjective for a practitioner. Regional synonyms for hoodoo include conjuration, conjure, *witchcraft*, or rootwork..Visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoodoo_(folk_magic) for more.
I imagine that this was what you were looking for, right?
Thank you once again to you guys.
thanks you so much for letting me know.
(Recently we even got a watchman-that may help.)
Anna, re the alphabet letters on my refrigerator…I put them on the front, and sometimes would find a couple were crooked — but a couple of times I noticed that when I opened and closed the refrigerator door one or more letters would move, so I wasn’t sure if I was causing them to move or if it was a spirit — so I gave up and put them away. I can’t put them on the sides as my refrigerator scoots in between two sets of counters and cupboards. If someone who is experiencing activity in their home could put them on one of the sides of their refrigerator as an experiment and let us know if anything happens, that would be really great!
thanks for the reply.i think i want to try it one day.if i do and it does work iw ill let you know.k.
your welcome!
I heard that spirits (especially DEMONS) Ring doorbells before entering a home. I strongly suggest checking EVERY SINGLE TIME BEFORE OPENING THE DOOR!!! If no one is there, then DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!
If there is someone you know there, open it but be very cautious and have holy water or crosses on standby. It could be a demon in disguise.
Thank you Rylee,I definitely will.Demons-interesting…yes that is a good idea-I will talk to my grandmother-the place where she lives-everybody is into religious stuff-and they have festivals when they do so-they sprinkle water around the house and do something called ‘dhishtu’ where they remove evil beings using salt and eggs, from the soul and house…but im not sure if it really works.my grandma told me another old story-very interesting.
When grandma was a little kid,she lived with her baby sister, brother and mother. They had one maid in the house and their father was usually out for work. They lived in an old Victorian i think,in a town.A few relatives were over too-all women. They all spread a huge mattress in the hall-and slept together, with the little kids in between, for comfort and safety-for there were no men folk.Late at night-they heard knocks on the door….not the front door, but the hall door-inside the house!!How could have anyone entered?Maybe it was the outhouse or neighbours-they had access…unless..could it be a thief? But Why in the world would a thief knock? So well, they did go and check..and no one! This happened a few times-(well in those times) there were no peep holes. It could be a bunch of pranksters….they thought…but they all strongly believed in ghosts and spirits. My great grandmother had a good idea just then. She took the burnt ashes of wood and quickly sprayed it outside the door. They were too scared to actually go outside. If it was someone-there would be footprints…the knocking re-occurred.They had a look at the ashes….no prints…most of the ashes had blown off….maybe the person spotted them,or maybe it was one without any legs…real legs…maybe it was a spirit.(as i write this-alone in my room-im getting very scary vibes)The second time-they waxed the door. The knocker would definitely leave prints correct? It happened again-and,absolutely no prints……Nobody could make anything out of it.It had to be spirits.(Well,it wasn’t any natural factors or people-for the front door-when they later checked, and all other doors were bolted shut-and there no open windows or anything. The air was very still, and if it had been wind, the chimes would have rung…right?)
What do you guys make out of it?
