Haunted House For Sale

Posted on June 27, 2008

I once lived, for a very short time, in a house haunted by ghosts. This house had been empty for a very long time. I don’t know for sure how long the house had been empty, but I do know that no one had lived in it for quite a few years.

It was a very beautiful three story house with a two room guest house and a big barn. It was located on the side of hill on a sparsely populated country road in south-eastern Kentucky. I had been living a few miles up the road and so I passed this house almost every day. For years there was a “For Sale” sign out front, but there never seemed to be a buyer.

I was working for a retired couple doing odd jobs. One day the old man made me an offer on the house. Until then I didn’t even know that he was the one who owned it. He said that if I would clear the weeds on the hillside behind it and keep all the grass cut, wash the windows and do some repairs that I could live in it rent free. Naturally I was excited about the idea and so within a few days my wife, my daughter, and I were moving into the house. I did think that it was a little strange that he and his wife lived in their small house next to the road instead of that nice big house on the hill, but I didn’t give it too much thought.

We couldn’t believe our luck. The house was really nice inside and out and the property it was on was beautiful. There was a huge yard and the mountain spread out behind it with trees every where you looked. The nearest neighbors were almost half a mile away.

After only a couple of nights strange things started to happen. One night we were laying in bed in the third story bedroom when I began to hear music. It reminded me of the Big Band groups like Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. The music sounded far off at first, but it grew louder and louder until it sounded like it was coming from downstairs. Next I could hear what sounded like a large group of people talking. I couldn’t make out what was being said, it was like a bunch of voices all mixed together. Suddenly a man and woman started yelling and arguing. I still couldn’t make out what was being said, but I knew for sure that it was a man and a woman who were fighting.

At this point I turned to my wife and asked her if she could hear anything. She looked at me and I saw that her eyes were wide and she was afraid. She told me that she did hear something downstairs. I asked her what it was that she was hearing. She described to me exactly what I myself had been hearing! She said she heard a lot of people talking and then a man and a woman arguing and some old fashioned music playing. When she told me all that it was like the hair on the back of my neck stood straight up. For some reason I had felt no fear until that moment, but suddenly I was afraid. Were there ghosts just downstairs from us?

We got up from the bed and slowly walked toward the stairs and turned on the lights. The music and the voices started getting quieter. We went down the first flight of stairs and turned on the next set of lights and the ghostly sounds stopped. Soon we were in the main living room and were looking all around for any signs of what we had heard. Suddenly the ghostly noises started up again, except this time they were upstairs! We ran upstairs and brought our daughter down to the first floor. We made pallets in the floor and spent the rest of the night listening for ghosts with most every light in the house turned on.

Several nights later the whole thing started happening again. This time I was home alone. My wife and daughter were visiting relatives for the weekend. I was bound and determined not to let the ghosts get to me and even yelled out to them to leave me alone and to go away. It seemed to work at first. The noises would stop and everything would be quiet, but as soon as I laid back down and began to get comfortable it would all start up again!

The next day I went to see a man I knew who I had rented our previous residence from. I told him about everything that had happened and asked him if he knew anything about the history of the house or had ever heard anything about it being haunted by ghosts. He told me that sometime back in the 1920’s there was a murder during a big family gathering, but didn’t know any details about what had happened or who had been murdered.

That really got me to feeling eerie! I knew without any doubt that the house was haunted because my wife and I had both heard the sounds on more than one occasion and now I had learned a little bit about the history of the house.

The very next day the owner of the house came by and told us that we had to move out right away. I asked him why, but he would give no explanation. He just said that he didn’t want anyone living in the house. I am certain that my ex-landlord had told him about what I had said about the ghosts and that was the reason he wanted us out as well as the reason why he wasn’t living there himself. So, not long afterwards we would be driving past the old house and see that “For Sale” sign and wonder if anyone would ever live there.

    Hi David,
you can’t question your imagination when you both heard this. That would be great to witness something with someone else experiencing it too.
Do you think that the landlord may have had a guilty conscience, because he may have witnessed all this for himself? He might have liked you both and then felt bad about leasing the place to you.

  2. Honor says:

What part of Southern Kentucky is this house located?

  3. Stephanie says:

Wow, I got tingles reading that. My vibes set of, there was no evil in the house though, I’m sure they just never knew that they were dead. Most ghosts don’t.

  4. The Caretaker says:

    Jackie

Yes, I think the owner of the house knew what had happened. He was in his 70s at the time and it was my understanding that the house had been in his family for a long time

    Honor

The house was in southeastern Ky in a place called Stephens Branch which is in Floyd County

    Stephanie

I dont think they were actually what is referred to as intelligent ghosts, I believe this was a case of a residual haunting which is more like a recording of psychic energy rather than an actual spiritual presence. Just my opinion

  5. Jackie says:

I think you are right with the residual haunting, i’m no expert but i have read about this and it does sound like it could be. A bit like a video recorder playing the same terrible event over and over, so i’ve heard.

  6. Dylan says:

If the owner told you to do the chores in the haunted house…Didn’t anything happen?

  7. martha says:

well, I think and I do believe that I might be living in a hounting house, not too long ago, I heard someone like bouncing a basketball outside my window.
The time was around 2:30 a.m I heard a basketball.

Hey i live in Stephans KY and i am interested about were this house may be cause i have never noticed it! Im for shur its somewere around here i just find your story interesting expesally about havin to move out and the man didnt give you a reason! I would just like to know were its exactly located. You can email me and let me know more info on this place if you want!

  9. The Caretaker says:

Hi Chrissy, The house was in Stephens Branch near Martin. About a year and a half ago I drove up that way and the area had changed so much I couldnt locate the house. It may have been torn down or something. There are now so many new houses, trailers, etc built through there that I hardly even recognized it at all. Oh well, I guess thats what a couple decades will do.

I do have some photos of that house somewhere, I will try to dig them up and get them scanned so I can add them to the story here.

I have also just posted another ghost experience I had at a grave yard in Auxier Ky Ghost Man In Graveyard Looked Into My Car

  11. The Caretaker says:

I have had several encounters with the paranormal in my life and I plan to write about more of them. What makes this one stand out so much is that I wasn’t the only one who heard the voices and the music. I was in my early 20s – maybe 21 – when this happened and I never thought about trying to record it. I am still looking for the photos. I have to dig some boxes out of the closet.

  12. monse says:

Hi everyone who read this. I liked this story the reason why i like it. its because it takes you back in the 20’s and stuff but any who the point of me sending this comment is because my family and I when threw something like this but what david when threw was More Horrrrriiiible I am currently Living in Los angeles ca. the housed that i used to live was in Hollywood and everything that happend to us was scary(dont feel like giving details just by thinking about it scares me =( ) but the good thing about this family is that they moved….

  13. russel says:

hi everyone! i like the story very much. i am just wondering why the owner didn’t have the house blessed by a priest or something. anyway, if it was just music and people talking i wouldn’t let that bother me too much as long as the ghost do not appear in front of me or try to hurt me in any way.

  14. Karen says:

Russel, you say that because you’ve probably never had an experience like that, that can really freak you out. I grew up in a haunted house with similar noises of their presense and yes one did actually manifest itself in front of me, you can’t know what you would feel unless it happend to you!

  15. Kim says:

    Hey David,
I am from Floyd County Kentucky myself. I was raised on Town Branch where my family had many “paranormal” experiences. I have never heard of this Haunted House but I am always interested in hearing about haunted places.

  16. Caretaker says:

    Hi Kim,

I know where Town Branch is and have been through there a few times. If you are headed down route 80 (from Pburg) Stephens Branch is the first road on the right after you pass the traffic light at Martin. There is now a Save a lot there where the road turns. Not too long ago my wife and I drove through there but the place had changed so much I couldnt find the house! It has been over 20 years though since I had been there.

    Thanks fr the comment.

  17. m says:

the reason why houses are haunted are because of jins, stay away from haunted houses, or u can get yourself in trouble.

  24. believer says:

maybe the ghosts in the old house are gathering again, soon as the guy told them to go out now probably they’ll hear a murder through out 1920’s or something. but thats just a thought

  26. Leslie says:

Hi David, I loved reading your story, i think it would freak me out living in a haunted house, even tho ive been told the house i used to live in as a kid was haunted, my dad and brother told me they had both witnessed doors opening and closing on there own, there are a few things that i remember that i used to wonder, what they were, like the bathroom tiles used to creek all the time like someone was walking across them, when no-one was in the bath room and our dog used to bark at thin air….. Anyway, i thought your story was fasinating :o ) thanks for sharing it :o )

  27. Caretaker says:

Thank you for your comment Leslie, I just wish that I had thought to do some research and investigating. If I were to experience the same thing now I would handle it much differently.

  32. George says:

Hey Caretaker, the reason the old man wanted you to leave that old house near Martin was because he had a dream. A bad dream about you and your family, and something bad happened in that dream.

  33. Caretaker says:

Hello George, now what would make you say a thing like that?

  34. PEACE AND LOVE! says:

Ok, “Lady Ga Ga” I dont believe its u

  35. Rose Kenney says:

    Hi David,
I read your story and that was scary. I used to take care of an old man. He lived in a very small house he had built himself. His routines were always the same . Eat lunch, move to the pallor , smoke, and go to the closet get his sweater and go for a walk. One day I was washing dishes ,When I thought I heard the closet door being opened. I heard a jiggle and a harder jiggle. and then real loud rattling. I yelled out what are you doing? There was no response. I walked around the corner and nobody was at the closet. I then still heard the noise and it was getting louder and louder as I went into the living room. There sat the old man in his chair starring across the room at a glass door that went out to a porch. The door was shaking so hard it looked like it was going to come off the hinges. You could see threw the door no one was on the other side. I was scared to death. I slowly walked up to the door and reached for the handle. Just before I touched the door it stopped. I asked the old man what was that? He said he never saw that before.I said if it happens again i’m out of there. He said he’d be right behind me.

my mother and her sister has seen ghost and i belive it because many kids said that there is a ghost.

  37. amanda says:

WHY WAS IT ”FOR SELL”AGAIN AND WHY DID THEY HAVE TO MOVE OUT THAT IS A LITTLE ODD.

  38. Angela says:

Hey David, thanks for sharing your story. That’s incredibly freaky and I think I would have left the very first night that the strange occurences happened. Something freaky happened to me once. Nothing like what happened to you, of course. About six years ago, me and my family moved into a new house. While I was in my room unpacking, the volume of my stereo (which was already hooked up) started to go up. I stared at the stereo and saw the volume numbers go up, without anyone or anything touching the volume knob. Even the remote to it was just sitting on a desk without anything touching it. Needless to say, it freaked me out. Do you think it was something paranormal that caused that to happen?

  39. valerie says:

    I belive you !!

  40. Farah says:

    wow,what a interesting GHoSt StOrY!Is it real.

  41. Pat says:

What a tale! I wonder if a house blessing or even an exorcism could rid the house of those spirits? It sounds like a wonderful home with a bad past. People live in the Amityville Horror house now and look how many people were killed there? What a scary tale! Thanks for sharing!

  42. Terry says:

I am truly interested! I know it may sound strange, but alone you aren’t afraid and would welcome guests! Not a joke!

  43. small town new yorker person says:

look i believe in ghosts and such but this story does seem fake just by the way its told, however i dont doubt it personally but just bout anything is possible however just because you hear sound doesnt mean you should be afraid sometimes its just like a tape playin over n over its too bad you left it already shoulda tried to get some recordings and remember there is nothing to fear but fear itself, people should embrace the idea of ghosts so maybe people wouldn’t be so worried about an after life or that sorta thing but for most people you can believe it until you see it, and for those of us who have ;) sounds like an awesome experience.

though i’d of kept the place, i wish i could live in a actively haunted house i mean im in one now but things happen once and a great while :)

  44. Caretaker says:

Hello small town new yorker person. I am very curious, what about the way it is written makes it sound fake? I would really like to know because I am the one who wrote this story (not a professional writer at all) and it happened 100% exactly as I described it. It isnt a big exciting story but it is the truth.

  45. small town new yorker person says:

well im not sure exactly i guess its just how things are worded, i know its not a big exciting story and im sure its the truth im this stuff can be faked but its real and i believe in it, doesnt have to be an exciting story to be true but mostly just seems it from how the text is placed is all

  46. Ellie says:

    Caretaker,
This was a wonderful story, that I believe 100%.
I’m curious, is this the reason you started delving into the paranormal? Thank you for sharing.

  47. Caretaker says:

That was one of them. I have had other experiences as well that have convinced me that there is something “out there”. Here is anohter of my experiences; http://www.trueghosttales.com/paranormal/terrifying-sleep-paralysis-experience/

  48. tinkerbella. says:

    Nice story,
But I was just curious on, why would the landlord let you move in if he knew it was “haunted”?

    Regards,

  49. Caretaker says:

    tinkerbella

I dont know the answer to that
