Haunted House For Sale

Posted on June 27, 2008

I once lived, for a very short time, in a house haunted by ghosts. This house had been empty for a very long time. I don’t know for sure how long the house had been empty, but I do know that no one had lived in it for quite a few years.

It was a very beautiful three story house with a two room guest house and a big barn. It was located on the side of hill on a sparsely populated country road in south-eastern Kentucky. I had been living a few miles up the road and so I passed this house almost every day. For years there was a “For Sale” sign out front, but there never seemed to be a buyer.

I was working for a retired couple doing odd jobs. One day the old man made me an offer on the house. Until then I didn’t even know that he was the one who owned it. He said that if I would clear the weeds on the hillside behind it and keep all the grass cut, wash the windows and do some repairs that I could live in it rent free. Naturally I was excited about the idea and so within a few days my wife, my daughter, and I were moving into the house. I did think that it was a little strange that he and his wife lived in their small house next to the road instead of that nice big house on the hill, but I didn’t give it too much thought.

We couldn’t believe our luck. The house was really nice inside and out and the property it was on was beautiful. There was a huge yard and the mountain spread out behind it with trees every where you looked. The nearest neighbors were almost half a mile away.

After only a couple of nights strange things started to happen. One night we were laying in bed in the third story bedroom when I began to hear music. It reminded me of the Big Band groups like Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. The music sounded far off at first, but it grew louder and louder until it sounded like it was coming from downstairs. Next I could hear what sounded like a large group of people talking. I couldn’t make out what was being said, it was like a bunch of voices all mixed together. Suddenly a man and woman started yelling and arguing. I still couldn’t make out what was being said, but I knew for sure that it was a man and a woman who were fighting.

At this point I turned to my wife and asked her if she could hear anything. She looked at me and I saw that her eyes were wide and she was afraid. She told me that she did hear something downstairs. I asked her what it was that she was hearing. She described to me exactly what I myself had been hearing! She said she heard a lot of people talking and then a man and a woman arguing and some old fashioned music playing. When she told me all that it was like the hair on the back of my neck stood straight up. For some reason I had felt no fear until that moment, but suddenly I was afraid. Were there ghosts just downstairs from us?

We got up from the bed and slowly walked toward the stairs and turned on the lights. The music and the voices started getting quieter. We went down the first flight of stairs and turned on the next set of lights and the ghostly sounds stopped. Soon we were in the main living room and were looking all around for any signs of what we had heard. Suddenly the ghostly noises started up again, except this time they were upstairs! We ran upstairs and brought our daughter down to the first floor. We made pallets in the floor and spent the rest of the night listening for ghosts with most every light in the house turned on.

Several nights later the whole thing started happening again. This time I was home alone. My wife and daughter were visiting relatives for the weekend. I was bound and determined not to let the ghosts get to me and even yelled out to them to leave me alone and to go away. It seemed to work at first. The noises would stop and everything would be quiet, but as soon as I laid back down and began to get comfortable it would all start up again!

The next day I went to see a man I knew who I had rented our previous residence from. I told him about everything that had happened and asked him if he knew anything about the history of the house or had ever heard anything about it being haunted by ghosts. He told me that sometime back in the 1920′s there was a murder during a big family gathering, but didn’t know any details about what had happened or who had been murdered.

That really got me to feeling eerie! I knew without any doubt that the house was haunted because my wife and I had both heard the sounds on more than one occasion and now I had learned a little bit about the history of the house.

The very next day the owner of the house came by and told us that we had to move out right away. I asked him why, but he would give no explanation. He just said that he didn’t want anyone living in the house. I am certain that my ex-landlord had told him about what I had said about the ghosts and that was the reason he wanted us out as well as the reason why he wasn’t living there himself. So, not long afterwards we would be driving past the old house and see that “For Sale” sign and wonder if anyone would ever live there.

    Hi David,
you can’t question your imagination when you both heard this. That would be great to witness something with someone else experiencing it too.
Do you think that the landlord may have had a guilty conscience, because he may have witnessed all this for himself? He might have liked you both and then felt bad about leasing the place to you.

  2. Honor says:

What part of Southern Kentucky is this house located?

  3. Stephanie says:

Wow, I got tingles reading that. My vibes set of, there was no evil in the house though, I’m sure they just never knew that they were dead. Most ghosts don’t.

  4. The Caretaker says:

    Jackie

Yes, I think the owner of the house knew what had happened. He was in his 70s at the time and it was my understanding that the house had been in his family for a long time

    Honor

The house was in southeastern Ky in a place called Stephens Branch which is in Floyd County

    Stephanie

I dont think they were actually what is referred to as intelligent ghosts, I believe this was a case of a residual haunting which is more like a recording of psychic energy rather than an actual spiritual presence. Just my opinion

  5. Jackie says:

I think you are right with the residual haunting, i’m no expert but i have read about this and it does sound like it could be. A bit like a video recorder playing the same terrible event over and over, so i’ve heard.

  6. Dylan says:

If the owner told you to do the chores in the haunted house…Didn’t anything happen?

  7. martha says:

well, I think and I do believe that I might be living in a hounting house, not too long ago, I heard someone like bouncing a basketball outside my window.
The time was around 2:30 a.m I heard a basketball.

  8. Chrissy F says:

Hey i live in Stephans KY and i am interested about were this house may be cause i have never noticed it! Im for shur its somewere around here i just find your story interesting expesally about havin to move out and the man didnt give you a reason! I would just like to know were its exactly located. You can email me and let me know more info on this place if you want!

    • The Caretaker says:

Hi Chrissy, The house was in Stephens Branch near Martin. About a year and a half ago I drove up that way and the area had changed so much I couldnt locate the house. It may have been torn down or something. There are now so many new houses, trailers, etc built through there that I hardly even recognized it at all. Oh well, I guess thats what a couple decades will do.

I do have some photos of that house somewhere, I will try to dig them up and get them scanned so I can add them to the story here.

I have also just posted another ghost experience I had at a grave yard in Auxier Ky Ghost Man In Graveyard Looked Into My Car

  9. lilsugaxo says:

    thats creepy

  10. The Caretaker says:

I have had several encounters with the paranormal in my life and I plan to write about more of them. What makes this one stand out so much is that I wasn’t the only one who heard the voices and the music. I was in my early 20s – maybe 21 – when this happened and I never thought about trying to record it. I am still looking for the photos. I have to dig some boxes out of the closet.

  11. monse says:

Hi everyone who read this. I liked this story the reason why i like it. its because it takes you back in the 20′s and stuff but any who the point of me sending this comment is because my family and I when threw something like this but what david when threw was More Horrrrriiiible I am currently Living in Los angeles ca. the housed that i used to live was in Hollywood and everything that happend to us was scary(dont feel like giving details just by thinking about it scares me =( ) but the good thing about this family is that they moved….

  12. russel says:

hi everyone! i like the story very much. i am just wondering why the owner didn’t have the house blessed by a priest or something. anyway, if it was just music and people talking i wouldn’t let that bother me too much as long as the ghost do not appear in front of me or try to hurt me in any way.

  13. Karen says:

Russel, you say that because you’ve probably never had an experience like that, that can really freak you out. I grew up in a haunted house with similar noises of their presense and yes one did actually manifest itself in front of me, you can’t know what you would feel unless it happend to you!

  14. Kim says:

    Hey David,
I am from Floyd County Kentucky myself. I was raised on Town Branch where my family had many “paranormal” experiences. I have never heard of this Haunted House but I am always interested in hearing about haunted places.

    • Caretaker says:

      Hi Kim,

I know where Town Branch is and have been through there a few times. If you are headed down route 80 (from Pburg) Stephens Branch is the first road on the right after you pass the traffic light at Martin. There is now a Save a lot there where the road turns. Not too long ago my wife and I drove through there but the place had changed so much I couldnt find the house! It has been over 20 years though since I had been there.

      Thanks fr the comment.

  15. m says:

the reason why houses are haunted are because of jins, stay away from haunted houses, or u can get yourself in trouble.

  16. clarky says:

is the house still there cause i live near it

  17. caitlin says:

    hello i’m caitlin

  18. Mith says:

    These are all rubbish.

    • Caretaker says:

Mith – you do not know what you are taliking about although you are entitled to your opinion – I was there I wrote this story and I KNOW what happened

    • dolly says:

      Mith,

You think that. I have expirienced things like this in the same room as me. I’ve been hearing footsteps walking around in the living room before. And I’ve heard an invisible voice making threats to me.

I know, it is your opinion, but if you don’t believe in this stuff then you shouldn’t be hanging around on a true ghost story website where everyone else believes it. I’m just sayin’.

  19. believer says:

maybe the ghosts in the old house are gathering again, soon as the guy told them to go out now probably they’ll hear a murder through out 1920′s or something. but thats just a thought

  20. d says:

    i beleive you

  21. Leslie says:

Hi David, I loved reading your story, i think it would freak me out living in a haunted house, even tho ive been told the house i used to live in as a kid was haunted, my dad and brother told me they had both witnessed doors opening and closing on there own, there are a few things that i remember that i used to wonder, what they were, like the bathroom tiles used to creek all the time like someone was walking across them, when no-one was in the bath room and our dog used to bark at thin air….. Anyway, i thought your story was fasinating :o ) thanks for sharing it :o )

    • Caretaker says:

Thank you for your comment Leslie, I just wish that I had thought to do some research and investigating. If I were to experience the same thing now I would handle it much differently.

  25. lady gaga says:

ive been hanging out in britan so i use bitish words.(mum) (american:mom)

  26. George says:

Hey Caretaker, the reason the old man wanted you to leave that old house near Martin was because he had a dream. A bad dream about you and your family, and something bad happened in that dream.

    • Caretaker says:

Hello George, now what would make you say a thing like that?

      • Reader says:

I am not that George but reading the story I get the feeling he was correct since he owned the house may have been a child and saw the happening, He could have a link,
Sometimes the reenactment of spirits or what ever is continued till the truth is established and breaks the scenario or house is destroyed who knows what happens then.

  27. PEACE AND LOVE! says:

Ok, “Lady Ga Ga” I dont believe its u

  28. Rose Kenney says:

    Hi David,
I read your story and that was scary. I used to take care of an old man. He lived in a very small house he had built himself. His routines were always the same . Eat lunch, move to the pallor , smoke, and go to the closet get his sweater and go for a walk. One day I was washing dishes ,When I thought I heard the closet door being opened. I heard a jiggle and a harder jiggle. and then real loud rattling. I yelled out what are you doing? There was no response. I walked around the corner and nobody was at the closet. I then still heard the noise and it was getting louder and louder as I went into the living room. There sat the old man in his chair starring across the room at a glass door that went out to a porch. The door was shaking so hard it looked like it was going to come off the hinges. You could see threw the door no one was on the other side. I was scared to death. I slowly walked up to the door and reached for the handle. Just before I touched the door it stopped. I asked the old man what was that? He said he never saw that before.I said if it happens again i’m out of there. He said he’d be right behind me.

  29. neelu says:

my mother and her sister has seen ghost and i belive it because many kids said that there is a ghost.

  30. amanda says:

WHY WAS IT ”FOR SELL”AGAIN AND WHY DID THEY HAVE TO MOVE OUT THAT IS A LITTLE ODD.

  31. Angela says:

Hey David, thanks for sharing your story. That’s incredibly freaky and I think I would have left the very first night that the strange occurences happened. Something freaky happened to me once. Nothing like what happened to you, of course. About six years ago, me and my family moved into a new house. While I was in my room unpacking, the volume of my stereo (which was already hooked up) started to go up. I stared at the stereo and saw the volume numbers go up, without anyone or anything touching the volume knob. Even the remote to it was just sitting on a desk without anything touching it. Needless to say, it freaked me out. Do you think it was something paranormal that caused that to happen?

  32. valerie says:

    I belive you !!

  33. Farah says:

    wow,what a interesting GHoSt StOrY!Is it real.

  34. Pat says:

What a tale! I wonder if a house blessing or even an exorcism could rid the house of those spirits? It sounds like a wonderful home with a bad past. People live in the Amityville Horror house now and look how many people were killed there? What a scary tale! Thanks for sharing!

  35. Terry says:

I am truly interested! I know it may sound strange, but alone you aren’t afraid and would welcome guests! Not a joke!

  36. small town new yorker person says:

look i believe in ghosts and such but this story does seem fake just by the way its told, however i dont doubt it personally but just bout anything is possible however just because you hear sound doesnt mean you should be afraid sometimes its just like a tape playin over n over its too bad you left it already shoulda tried to get some recordings and remember there is nothing to fear but fear itself, people should embrace the idea of ghosts so maybe people wouldn’t be so worried about an after life or that sorta thing but for most people you can believe it until you see it, and for those of us who have ;) sounds like an awesome experience.

though i’d of kept the place, i wish i could live in a actively haunted house i mean im in one now but things happen once and a great while :)

    • Caretaker says:

Hello small town new yorker person. I am very curious, what about the way it is written makes it sound fake? I would really like to know because I am the one who wrote this story (not a professional writer at all) and it happened 100% exactly as I described it. It isnt a big exciting story but it is the truth.

  37. small town new yorker person says:

well im not sure exactly i guess its just how things are worded, i know its not a big exciting story and im sure its the truth im this stuff can be faked but its real and i believe in it, doesnt have to be an exciting story to be true but mostly just seems it from how the text is placed is all

  38. Ellie says:

    Caretaker,
This was a wonderful story, that I believe 100%.
I’m curious, is this the reason you started delving into the paranormal? Thank you for sharing.

  39. tinkerbella. says:

    Nice story,
But I was just curious on, why would the landlord let you move in if he knew it was “haunted”?

    Regards,

  40. eve says:

this is scary for me because i never belive and ghost before but now i think so

  41. verna says:

i have some question about ghost or devil or demon,,, why do bad spirits appeared in my neighbor’s house even they already gave a house blessing in the house?

bad spirits dont afraid in God?

  42. jhean says:

    ..i love this story!!
    so much..

  43. scarygirl67 says:

I can’t believe I just found this! I totally believe you….of course, I’m biased because I have had experiences, especially in the house I grew up in….as a child, I was terrified of the sounds I heard and the things I would see.

I distinctly remember one night when I was laying in bed…probably around seven or eight years old…and I heard old-fashioned fiddle music…it seems to me the song was Buffalo Gals…I heard the song later and I remembered that night. I am sure that the music continued to be there…but after that night, I started sleeping with the radio turned on so I wouldn’t hear it anymore. I had already become weary of hearing my family tell me it was “just my imagination.”

  44. Ric says:

I enjoy reading stuff like this perhaps one day ill have a paranormal experience of my own

    Regards.

  45. shylla_diva says:

Hi there caretaker…That is totally wicked! since i can relate, ive heared a bunch of voices (just without the music though) in the middle of the night at our sala when i was 14 yrs old. We wer living in tarlac lazatin subd. Philippines then.

  46. Another believer says:

I found your story to be very fascinating. I have no doubt you experienced these things because I’ve also had similar experiences when I was younger. I wish I could have researched the homes I lived in to find their history. I hope someday you will find out what the history of that home was, too.

  47. spritgirl says:

Im not really scaredof ghost because I have had a lot of exprienses myself. This story is so belivible.I wish I had the nerve to wrte about about my exprienses.Like when my 4 year old cousin died march 25.2009.Then I saw the very next morning. Anyway I love this story and I belive you.

  48. almond_jack says:

  51. Bonnie says:

    Hi David,

I just read your story. It’s great and scary! Both you, your wife and your daughter were very brave to stay in that house, even for a short time. I’m not sure if I could ever be that brave. I’m glad that you and your family are alright. I have to agree with one of your readers, I think that the old man you had rented the house from probably feared for both you and your family’s safety, once he found out what you guys were going through. I’m glad that you and your family are all alright. Hey, my husband is from Kentucky as well…the Louisville area. I just love it there. I really like some of the beautiful old houses that are located throughout Kentucky. Alot of history, I’m sure. Once we get our fill of the Keys and the hurricanes one day, we’ll probably move up that way. Anyway, thank you for sharing your experiece. I look forward to more of your stories in the future.

  52. Bonnie says:

You’re very welcome, Caretaker. You and your family have a great rest of the weekend.

  53. Bonnie says:

    Hi Caretaker,

I just read your other story about the ghost man that was looking in your car window, while you and your friend were in the graveyard, back when you were a teenager. That would have scared me something fierce! I tried to leave a comment, but, I wasn’t able to. Very scary story and experience! Thank you for sharing. Gosh, when I was 16 years old (back in the day…), I was scared of my own shadow, hee! hee!

    • Caretaker says:

Bonnie, That story was absolutely true just as this one is. I have had several different “encounters” during my life. That is what led me to create this website. That is also why I always say “I have to believe in ghosts, I have no choice”

  54. Bonnie says:

    Hi Caretaker,

This is a great website for people to be able to share their paranormal experiences with others. Some very interesting reading, as well, along with great conversation. I enjoy logging onto it and reading some of the interesting experiences from some of the readers. Plus, I enjoy reading a good ghost story, especially when it’s based on true facts. I also enjoy reading up on UFO experiences that people have had or witnessed. I have never witnessed one myself, but, my husband has experienced one years ago. I’ll submit that story one day here real soon. I am going to email my neice and tell her about your website. She very interested in the paranormal world as well. I know that she’ll enjoy it.

Caretaker, You and your family have a great Sunday! It was great talking to you!

  62. Tai says:

    Great story mate,

I used to live in a house in Auckland NZ when I was growing up that I know is haunted. It was a small 3 bedroom townhouse with not much space. We didn’t have much money back then so we lived where we could. My father worked long hours and my mother too. I was 15 when I started to notice things happening. One night I was asleep in my room when I saw a light outside my door. I didn’t think much of it because we sometimes left the light on for my sister to go to the bathroom. But this light was diferent it seemed to get dull and then bright again like a light was pulsating. I decided to get up and have a look. I opened the door and it was dark, I looked downstairs and saw a light moving towards the kitchen, like someone had a torch. I decided to follow it as I tought it might be my father, I walked down the stairs and notice the light had stopped by the kitchen sink, but there was no – one around, as I walked into the kitchen the kitchen became very warm, and too to my surpise I looked at the stove and saw that someone had left the elements on, I quickly turned them off and as I did this the kitchen went dark. I stood there in fear and began thinking ,what just happened. I then ran upstairs past my bedroom and jumped into my mothers bed I was shaking and my mum woke up and asked me what was wrong. After telling her my dad had woken up and gone to investigate the kitchen. He came back and looked at my mum with a strange look I said to him “what was it dad” he turned to me and said it’s okay mate sleep in here tonight. It took me awhile to go back to sleep but before drifting off to sleep I could hear my mother and father whispering about something but I couldn’t work it out. After time I had forgotten what had happened that night but kept hearing thnigs like doors openning and closing, footsteps in the hallway, someone walking up and down the stairs. The weidest thing I noticed is that no -one liked sleeping in my room because it was either too cold or too hot to stay in there but for some reason I never had a problem. Many years later we moved out west. We were sitting at dinner one night and I am now 21 years old. We began talking about the old house and then the conversation took a dive. My mother and father refused to talk about it. I had to know so I kept asking “What’s wrong with that house”…being religeous my father didn’t want to talk about it and left the table..My mother began….she said that when we moved in all those years ago they had a visit from the previous owner and they were told that the previous owners brother had died in the house…the story went that one night he had gone out for some drinks and had come home in a sorry state. He went into the kitchen to make him something to eat and then went up to his room. Before he went into his room he slipped and missed the last step and fell backwards down the stairs breaking his neck at the bottom. When I heard this everything made sense the noise of the open and closing doors and the stove. But nothing gave a chill as much as finding out that the room that use to belong to him was my room. I later spoke to my father and realised why he didn’t want to talk about it ….times were hard back then and we didn’t have the money to move so my father did what he could to protect us and that’s by keeping us close…especially at night. My dads gone now but I know he still protects me…especially at night.

    • Grant says:

  64. KNOWTOMUCH says:

Caretaker,,,this story gave me some insight of what you have experienced… he probably wanted you guys out, worrying that the story would get out and he would never sell the house!!!

The house that my parents built brand new in 1969, also had a lot of paranormal events going on..all we knew was,, there was an old trailor park on the 2 acres ,many years before.. i used to hear music in other rooms also.. sounded like, old victorian, music, and i also heard people talking… mom and dad lived in this house for over 35 years…

a lot of strange things happened in that house over the years… my mom, recently told me, that she also used to hear music and people talking, but would never tell us kids, thinking it would just scare us to death…..she also told me that sometimes, it seemed as if the room was changing around her, especaily, my old bedroom…

i have always been facinated by haunted houses!!! i will post as time goes on about other paranormal things that used to happen there…..

what a great story!!! by the way,, my dad’s name was David…….

My parents live in an older home the past couple of months when they are awake at approximently 2 am they are hearing what sounds to be a music box with a tune of happy birthday playing. there is no such music box in the room or the entire home. Friday night we gave a suprise birthday party for my mother , that night the music came yet it was over her recliner and then moved while playing to another corner of the room moving to the ceiling and then down to the floor. This is the first time it has moved from the original corner it was playing. It will last approx 3 minutes every time.. My mother is convinced it is spirit of her mother wishing her happy birthday from beyond ( her birthday is wed) Does anyone know if spirits can create music this way?
    thank you

  66. KNOWTOMUCH says:

Katrina,, sure they can!!! that is wonderful……my whole life, i have heard music coming from other rooms, of course when i get there, nothing…. i bet it is her mother wishing her a happy birthday…. i really think that spirits can communicate in many ways……ktm

  70. GodsAngel09 says:

I remember when I was younger and after my grandfather passed away in 1980. A few nights after he passed I used to lay all spread out on the bed, well this particular night changed all that. I got woke up feeling something touching my hand which dangled off my top bunk I was sleeping in. when I woke up I saw this bright light leaving out of the corner of my room I looked to see if the hallway was any light to make this but nothing it was dark, then I had a feeling of someone saying good bye to me. It was my grandpop saying bye to me and letting me know he was fine. A few years later my puppy died from parvo while I was at school that night I looked across the street and there was a bright light shining down from the sky in that light was my puppy he looked at me and then he was gone. Other things have happened to me like faces in the corner laughing at me, a giant spider on my ceiling, snakes in the bed, of course all this was only seen by me cause when I seen the spider and the snakes and was screaming for my parents to come in they didnt see them but yet they were still there..I finally had to go to bed every night praying to God to not let anything scare me anymore after a few nights this all stopped and my nights got much easier…to this day its never happened again.

  71. F.L. Cummings says:

I am 75 yrs old – and believe in the supernatural – one instance was unusually strange – it happened in 1960 while my family was living in a rented house in the pine barrens of central New Jersey – the house was 3 story – over a hundred years old – and a very beautifully cared for Victorian. On certain nights, we could hear someone strumming a guitar in the 3rd story, which was pretty much storage, however, livable as a 2 bedroom suite. I was alone much of the time with 2 small children, as my husband worked in Trenton, and only came home on week ends – I finally nagged him to investigate the guitar strumming, as well as other sounds such as bells ringing, and glass tinkling. We were both terrified as we started up the winding 3rd floor staircase, and pushed the first door open. Nothing there, so we went to the sec ond bedroom. There on the wall was a guitar hanging by a rope. by a cracked window. When the wind blew from the north hard enough to enter the crack, the guitar would sway and scrape against two nails protruding from the wall nearby. Thus the guitar strumming. However, there was nothing else in the room to account for tinkling glass or bells . Not even one piece of glass, bell – nothing. The glass and tinkling sounds continued until we moved.

This sounds awfully like a a residual haunting – the replaying of an event over and over.
I grew up in similar circumstances where my grandfather ( dead ) – continued to be heard to get up and go to work for many years after he died.
Given the emotion involved, that there was possibly a murder involved in the ‘party’ it is likely to have imprinted on the house.
Tragic or emotional eventsand even routineevents tend to imprint on locations.
There is still a platoon of Roman soldiers marching down an old roman road now buried in a cellar in England! LOL

  78. eyepriestess says:

Whitestone, i once encountered a demon and the only way is to pray to God, but God did make one of his angels a demon slayer. I know Jesus said only pray to our father, but this is not a prayer it is a request:

    Saint Michael the Archangel,
    defend us in battle;
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray:
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
    by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

  85. whitestone73 says:

hi its whitestone73 something realy odd happened to me 3yr ago, i was asleep in my bed i was turning over on my side and felt something sharp coming out of my bed, i grabbed it with 3 fingers and tried to pull it out it woul not budge, so i tried pushing it down into my mattress, it wouldnt move, like something was holding onto it but in a different realm, i woke up my husband and said theres something sharp in this bed i told him to hold onto it, dont let it go, he took hold of it and did same as me, tried pulling it out, and pushing it down, nothing it was dark in my room, and this object, which felt like a thick needle or long probe was down by my waist, i said let me hold it an you go turn on the light (so we could see what it was) i said dont let it go until ive got it, he was half asleep and let it go before i had possession of it, when he turned on the light it was gone, we searched the bed, took off the sheet, nothing, now mind you this object could not be pulled out or in hard like a thick needle, then it just vanishes, as if i was not to have found it while i was sleeping, and when i did, that ”something was caught” was this alien activity, was this voodoo or withraft, whatever this mysterious event was, it was caugt, and could not complete its plan, any thoughts, this is just one strange event that has took place in my life.

  86. puppetmasterlady says:

The house was not haunted by ‘ghosts’. It sounds like a residual haunting to me.
Residual hauntings occur when an event becomes impressed upon the ‘fabric’ of the environment. Strong emotions are usually the ‘tool’ which embosses such events into an environment.
The event will then replay over and over at times, sometimes when triggered (perhaps by the presence of a new family) Residual hauntings are complex, but the don’t involve ghosts or entities. It’s almost exactly like a broken record playing the same swath of a song over and over- its just a recording. Theres no intelligence or intent behind it.

    • Caretaker says:

puppetmasterlady You are correct and actually I said it was a Residual haunting quote “I dont think they were actually what is referred to as intelligent ghosts, I believe this was a case of a residual haunting which is more like a recording of psychic energy rather than an actual spiritual presence. Just my opinion”

  88. R.J. says:

Hi, I’ve lived in a haunted townhouse condo on Cortes Dr. in Nashua, New Hampshire(in the first seven years of my life).

Most of the activity would only happen in my bedroom on the second floor. Most times I only heard sounds(no voices). Just loud distinct H, S(snake-like), or even Z sound whispers(once in a while, I would hear indescribable sounds. Nothing sounded human(to me).

But sometimes, I would see what appeared to be the table-tops of completely black ironing boards(without leg stools or anything) standing right-side up(vertically erect) and gliding effortlessly. They appeared harmless and only snooped around, feeling with their heads.

Only once do I recall an unforgettable experience(it intentionally wanted to scare me). This thing was nothing but a long dark narrow box. But it approached my crib(I was only about a year old) in such a way as to frighten me!

But like every night as soon as my mom or dad entered the room, the entities(or whatever) would simply vanish.

Weather it be baskets floating in mid-air, posters sucked off and plastered back on the walls, or even seeing dust and debris(on the carpet) do extraordinary things, That room sure had something going on!!!

  99. Shirley King says:

Hi Caretaker, great story thank you for sharing your experience. I moved to Kentucky last year from Ohio, the home I grew up in was once originally a funeral home posted on this site under Shirley King I believe the title said haunted house in Ohio part 1 if I remember correctly. I had my fair share of experience with the supernatural. I am so relieved now I am renting a home that has some activity but the activity remains low. There is parts of Kentucky that just give me the creeps! Not long ago I was in a local grocery store and seen a spirit next to a women and her shopping cart. Its been so long since I seen something that dead on I was second guessing myself. Until it looked right at me and kept on looking at me.

For many years I have been trying to block these things out thats why I stopped posting on this site I needed to take a break. Now its coming back and Im starting to see and hear things again. So I can honestly relate with the experiences you have went through. Please keep sharing your experiences it really does let people like me out here know we are not alone. That in fact other people experience things as well. You said that area where you rented that house from has newer homes around now. Since you cannot find it my guess someone purchased the land and its been torn down and something is where it once was just an idea. Nothing about good old Kentucky shocks me I have seen some weird things while living here the short time I have.

    • Caretaker says:

      Hello Shirley

You may see your own entries at http://www.trueghosttales.com/paranormal/tag/shirley-king/

When I said that I couldnt find it you have to understand that the land and the area had changed very much over 20 or so years. Where once were just a few houses scattered a good distance from each other and lots of trees now there are lots of new houses and mobile homes and much fewer trees. The place looked so different that I was unable to figure out exactly where the house had been located.

The house was really nice and very old, I couldnt imagine someone tearing it down BUT over the years it could have become run down or maybe it even burned. Hmm good idea, I will try to find out if there were any house fires in that area.

If you would like to read more about my experiences with the strange in Ky – http://caretaker.paranormalculture.com

Hello, great story. Shirley you are not alone. Every so often I lurk on these sites to help give myself a sense of the “I am not alones.” I am sensitive, or however you choose to put it. Some hereditary genetic twitch. I would not wish on anyone. Luckily there is only one of us per generation! : ) Hauntings, even residuals are enough to make you realize that we know very little about the paranormal. At least when you live in a haunted house you can move out and hope nothing follows you. : ) It is much more difficult when it is you that seems to be haunted! : )

  100. AnNa says:

i think it was cool that you got to live there rent free well for a little.i think thats weird that the landlord kick you out.whats going to happen someone moving in there and they ask the same question or here the voices and hes going to kick them out.he should just get it knocked down.did you ever find out more on the house then what the one landlord said?thanks for the story.

  101. AnNa says:

if the landlord knew why would he have you and your family stay there?maybe because the other landlord ask this landlord and he got freaked out.who knows.did you take some pictures of the place?

    • Caretaker says:

Anna- this happened over 20 years ago. I do have pictures somewhere but not sure where; in a box in a closet somewhere. I need to find them and scan a few to add to the story.

My own belief is that the landlord had experienced the same thing before. Or perhaps he did know about something bad that had happened there and didnt want it brought back to attention. Unfortunately I will probably never know.

      • AnNa says:

when you do find the pictures i will be waiting.thanks good story by the way.

        Hey “caretaker guy” …
You’ve had over a year to find pictures of this “haunted house” you lived in. I am not even a skeptic of paranormal activity. I grew up in a haunted house and my mother still lives there. I hate that house. I never go there and I live on the same street. Funny, how you can’t find the house, nor can you find pictures. Give me a break. Hehe.

        • Caretaker says:

Anonymous – I never said I couldn’t find the pictures. I said I need to dig them out as they are in a box somewhere in a closet. Also what difference would the picture make? Would you think it was proof if I showed you a picture? Well, how about if I just posted a pic of any old house I could find and told you that was it? You “give me a break Hehe” And another thing – I dont care if you believe this story or not, it makes no difference whatsoever to me and doesnt change the facts. Yeah it happened exactly as I described it. Thanks for your comment.

  102. Kandice says:

I wonder if the spirits will still be on the land even if it was tore down? I live with my dad and stepmom in a house that was just built in 2001 and the other night me and my boyfriend both heard music from a really old music box playing inside the house just a floor below us! I asked my parents the next day and both of them didnt wake up or have any idea what it couldve been. I did some research and found out the land where the house was built was owen by a plantation owner and was was overtaken in the civil war! There is also a really old courthouse down the street from us that was used as a base in the war!

    hey caretaker,

great story. its very creepy. i love ghost stories but i wouldn’t say im a beliver. i have never had any paranormal activity happen to me. but i do love reading or hearing stories. but im not a skeptic. but i do belive in spirits. good and bad. but i do know some people who had paranormal activities that they experience. like my friend when he moved into his new house. but only lived there for a couple of months. ive only been there maybe like 5 times or so. i didnt experience anything there other than just some strange feelings. but about 3 months ago they told me what theyre experiences when they lived in that house. like one afternoon when his mom and sister was home by theyre selves, they heard a trumpet upstairs when no one in the house owned a trumpet. and when his mom was home alone, she went upstairs right after work to change clothes b4 picking up my friend from school, and when she went back downstairs, all the cabinets in the kitchen was all open. and when they heard his little brother talking to some one and when they asked him who it was he said “the kid, he’s very funny”..but when they ask his little brother now..he doesnt remember. or when his sister was taking pictures in the bathroom for myspace, when they looked at the picture closely, they saw a face where the towel is smiling. i wouldnt say i have any experiences because i am not sure. but i work in a bookstore. and i do hear things. like books falling. i hear like someone was riding a scooter in front of where the computer/register area and ill look and no one is there. but i dont know. well anyways i like this story alot and im glad nothing bad happened to you and your family.

    totally mastermind stories

  113. Big Chief says:

Hmm, good story. I saw this before but never replied to it. Alot of people would say that this is a case of a residual haunting but I never really believed in residual hauntings. Here is why. I believe in an actual physical presence of ghost/spirits in the house. In the story and I quote the author says:

“I was bound and determined not to let the ghosts get to me and even yelled out to them to leave me alone and to go away. It seemed to work at first. The noises would stop and everything would be quiet, but as soon as I laid back down and began to get comfortable it would all start up again!”.

The “residual haunting” listened to the living persons command to “stop” once the person said so but then started up again when the person laid down and got comfortable. Why would a residual haunting listen to a persons command to stop if it was residual. I’ve heard of actual spirit hauntings listening to peoples commands to stop as there was an actual physical spirit presence there. Why would something residual stop its activities on a persons command if it is not an actual physical presence. Isn’t the residual just physic energy that’s just supposed to keep “playing” without regard to anyone around.

The “residual energy” also got louder downstairs as the residents went downstairs to check it out then shifted itself to upstairs once the residents finally reached downstairs. So the “residual energy” seemed to shift in acknowledgment of the residents in the house as they were coming downstairs. It shifted the noise to upstairs where the residents just came from. That “residual energy” seems to acknowledge the commands of the residents of the house and also the movements of the residents of the house. How can this be if the energy is “residual”. Shouldn’t the residual energy act indifferent regardless to the residents of the house.

What I believe is that the residual energy is actually “physical ghost” that are possibly in a realm where they are reliving their same lives over and over again. I’ve heard of a realm before where people relive their lives over and over again until they get over their problems or something like that. Or, it can just be physical spirits/ghost that are creating these noises (footsteps, music playing etc…). I believe spirits can create all types of noises and smells with their own energy.

This doesn’t sound like residual energy to me because the “residual energy” reacts to the residents voice commands and movements around the house.. Why would residual energy react to residents commands to “stop” and also move from downstairs to upstairs once the residence headed downstairs to check out the “residual energies” activities downstairs. This clearly shows the “residual energies” acknowledgment of the residents in the house. How is that possible??

  114. Big Chief says:

Oh, ok. This is your story, Caretaker. I kind of figured so but I wasn’t too sure…

I Believe certain places have a certain energy from the people living there, for example the little extra house add on at the back of a house that had it’s own bedroom, lounge, bath and stove top. Used to be lived in by my mans grand-mother before she had a stroke there in front of her youngest grand-son. When me and my man used to go back to this place, he was living in this extra house add on at the back of his dads house, the energy was inviting, when I was pregnant with my 1st child and living in our own rented place with my man, me and my man went back to this extra house add on, with his brother living in the extra house add on. The energy from this house add on was now negative.

There is no such thing as a ghost. They are demons. I know people like to believe in ghost story’s, but they are just that, story’s. Being a real christian I understand that when people die there is no in between state, you either go to heaven or to hell and the beings that people believe are ghost are really demons. Demons are cast upon this earth to reak havoc. I know I will get crap from most people who are ignorant to this fact. That’s ok. I know the truth.

    • Caretaker says:

Hello Sam – can you cite any scripture that actually says anyone will go to heaven? Just curious.

    • Andrea says:

      Hi sam,

I’m a Christian and i believe that ghosts are very real.
I know because I’ve seen floating white people in graveyards. And I’ve heard ghost people talking (you couldnt see them though) but the rocking chairs on the neighbors porch was rocking.

Thats scary stuff, i’ve had a lot of strange stuff that i can’t find an answer for i know there a gost we all do at home but it doesn.t bother us ang get this i LIKE living with a ghost i think its pretty cool. if you need help talk to me i’ll get to you as son as possible, no im not physic i just have had a lot of experiance, i would recomend wearing a pentagram aroung your neck and talking to the ghost, but don’t plead, rember your the living being he/she is dead and can’t harm you. oh and no a pentagram is NOT the symbol of witch craft it protects you from bad and evil spirits and banasihes bad luck, works for me. if the ghost refuses all that then threaten them, tell them you will get a meduim in and they will make the ghost leave for good. but try to find an answer first because there usally is. thanks for reading Amber.

I found this site researching my ongoing noises mostly in one of my bedrooms. I bought this condo 5 years ago and from the beginning I have heard odd knocking noises behind my bed. Sometime the knocking starts at the beginning of the wall behind my bed and knocks all the way down to the end of the room. Sometimes its loud and sometimes gentle. On three different occasions, I heard what sounded like a stack of heavy books being dropped in my walk in closet by my bed. The first time I heard it I jumped straight up because I thought the shelving had all fallen but when I looked in the closet all was okay. I heard this type noise on two other occasions. A friend of mine was standing in my bedroom and we were talking and he heard the knocking noise and he was amazed. He shook his head and said I can’t explain it.

My sister was staying over night and she was sleeping on the couch in my loft because she was too nervous about the noises to sleep in the down stairs bed room by her self.
I was in my bed asleep when she awakened me. The sofa she was on is backed up against another walkin closet. She told me she heard the knocking coming from the inside of that closet but she also heard scratching all the way down the wall. She said she told me “that’s not funny,” and when I didn’t answer ( she thought I was playing a joke on her)she came and found me asleep. Not much sleep the rest of that night.

I am use to the noises and most times its hohum but occasionally I get the chill bumps. On two occasions, I have almost left to go to my sisters but I didn’t.

Bringing me up to today. I was folding clothes and putting blouses on hangers when knock knock knock by my bed. I started talking to whatever and said we should try a morse code and see if we can communicate. I knocked back on the wall and waited but nothing. I then went into my closet to hang my clothes you guessed it knock knock on the back of the closet wall. This knock was a little shy almost childlike whereas the one behind my bed was a bit stronger.

So who knows. I have tried to explain it away maybe chipmunks or squirrels in the attic but that won’t fly either; house settling not consistent with those kind of noises. So I will just keep on keeping on and not worry about it and we will see.
