Haunted House For Sale

Posted on June 27, 2008

I once lived, for a very short time, in a house haunted by ghosts. This house had been empty for a very long time. I don’t know for sure how long the house had been empty, but I do know that no one had lived in it for quite a few years.

It was a very beautiful three story house with a two room guest house and a big barn. It was located on the side of hill on a sparsely populated country road in south-eastern Kentucky. I had been living a few miles up the road and so I passed this house almost every day. For years there was a “For Sale” sign out front, but there never seemed to be a buyer.

I was working for a retired couple doing odd jobs. One day the old man made me an offer on the house. Until then I didn’t even know that he was the one who owned it. He said that if I would clear the weeds on the hillside behind it and keep all the grass cut, wash the windows and do some repairs that I could live in it rent free. Naturally I was excited about the idea and so within a few days my wife, my daughter, and I were moving into the house. I did think that it was a little strange that he and his wife lived in their small house next to the road instead of that nice big house on the hill, but I didn’t give it too much thought.

We couldn’t believe our luck. The house was really nice inside and out and the property it was on was beautiful. There was a huge yard and the mountain spread out behind it with trees every where you looked. The nearest neighbors were almost half a mile away.

After only a couple of nights strange things started to happen. One night we were laying in bed in the third story bedroom when I began to hear music. It reminded me of the Big Band groups like Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. The music sounded far off at first, but it grew louder and louder until it sounded like it was coming from downstairs. Next I could hear what sounded like a large group of people talking. I couldn’t make out what was being said, it was like a bunch of voices all mixed together. Suddenly a man and woman started yelling and arguing. I still couldn’t make out what was being said, but I knew for sure that it was a man and a woman who were fighting.

At this point I turned to my wife and asked her if she could hear anything. She looked at me and I saw that her eyes were wide and she was afraid. She told me that she did hear something downstairs. I asked her what it was that she was hearing. She described to me exactly what I myself had been hearing! She said she heard a lot of people talking and then a man and a woman arguing and some old fashioned music playing. When she told me all that it was like the hair on the back of my neck stood straight up. For some reason I had felt no fear until that moment, but suddenly I was afraid. Were there ghosts just downstairs from us?

We got up from the bed and slowly walked toward the stairs and turned on the lights. The music and the voices started getting quieter. We went down the first flight of stairs and turned on the next set of lights and the ghostly sounds stopped. Soon we were in the main living room and were looking all around for any signs of what we had heard. Suddenly the ghostly noises started up again, except this time they were upstairs! We ran upstairs and brought our daughter down to the first floor. We made pallets in the floor and spent the rest of the night listening for ghosts with most every light in the house turned on.

Several nights later the whole thing started happening again. This time I was home alone. My wife and daughter were visiting relatives for the weekend. I was bound and determined not to let the ghosts get to me and even yelled out to them to leave me alone and to go away. It seemed to work at first. The noises would stop and everything would be quiet, but as soon as I laid back down and began to get comfortable it would all start up again!

The next day I went to see a man I knew who I had rented our previous residence from. I told him about everything that had happened and asked him if he knew anything about the history of the house or had ever heard anything about it being haunted by ghosts. He told me that sometime back in the 1920’s there was a murder during a big family gathering, but didn’t know any details about what had happened or who had been murdered.

That really got me to feeling eerie! I knew without any doubt that the house was haunted because my wife and I had both heard the sounds on more than one occasion and now I had learned a little bit about the history of the house.

The very next day the owner of the house came by and told us that we had to move out right away. I asked him why, but he would give no explanation. He just said that he didn’t want anyone living in the house. I am certain that my ex-landlord had told him about what I had said about the ghosts and that was the reason he wanted us out as well as the reason why he wasn’t living there himself. So, not long afterwards we would be driving past the old house and see that “For Sale” sign and wonder if anyone would ever live there.

I can’t believe I just found this! I totally believe you….of course, I’m biased because I have had experiences, especially in the house I grew up in….as a child, I was terrified of the sounds I heard and the things I would see.

I distinctly remember one night when I was laying in bed…probably around seven or eight years old…and I heard old-fashioned fiddle music…it seems to me the song was Buffalo Gals…I heard the song later and I remembered that night. I am sure that the music continued to be there…but after that night, I started sleeping with the radio turned on so I wouldn’t hear it anymore. I had already become weary of hearing my family tell me it was “just my imagination.”

I found your story to be very fascinating. I have no doubt you experienced these things because I’ve also had similar experiences when I was younger. I wish I could have researched the homes I lived in to find their history. I hope someday you will find out what the history of that home was, too.

    Hi David,

I just read your story. It’s great and scary! Both you, your wife and your daughter were very brave to stay in that house, even for a short time. I’m not sure if I could ever be that brave. I’m glad that you and your family are alright. I have to agree with one of your readers, I think that the old man you had rented the house from probably feared for both you and your family’s safety, once he found out what you guys were going through. I’m glad that you and your family are all alright. Hey, my husband is from Kentucky as well…the Louisville area. I just love it there. I really like some of the beautiful old houses that are located throughout Kentucky. Alot of history, I’m sure. Once we get our fill of the Keys and the hurricanes one day, we’ll probably move up that way. Anyway, thank you for sharing your experiece. I look forward to more of your stories in the future.

Hello Bonnie, thank you for your nice comment.

  13. Bonnie says:

You’re very welcome, Caretaker. You and your family have a great rest of the weekend.

  14. Bonnie says:

    Hi Caretaker,

I just read your other story about the ghost man that was looking in your car window, while you and your friend were in the graveyard, back when you were a teenager. That would have scared me something fierce! I tried to leave a comment, but, I wasn’t able to. Very scary story and experience! Thank you for sharing. Gosh, when I was 16 years old (back in the day…), I was scared of my own shadow, hee! hee!

  15. Caretaker says:

Bonnie, That story was absolutely true just as this one is. I have had several different “encounters” during my life. That is what led me to create this website. That is also why I always say “I have to believe in ghosts, I have no choice”

  16. Bonnie says:

    Hi Caretaker,

This is a great website for people to be able to share their paranormal experiences with others. Some very interesting reading, as well, along with great conversation. I enjoy logging onto it and reading some of the interesting experiences from some of the readers. Plus, I enjoy reading a good ghost story, especially when it’s based on true facts. I also enjoy reading up on UFO experiences that people have had or witnessed. I have never witnessed one myself, but, my husband has experienced one years ago. I’ll submit that story one day here real soon. I am going to email my neice and tell her about your website. She very interested in the paranormal world as well. I know that she’ll enjoy it.

Caretaker, You and your family have a great Sunday! It was great talking to you!

  17. Caretaker says:

Thank you Bonnie, you are very kind.

  18. Bonnie says:

    Hi David,

    You’re very welcome.

Just a note: Maybe your landlord’s dates were off, but Big Band music (Glenn Miller, etc) was late 30s, early 40s.

  25. Tai says:

    Great story mate,

I used to live in a house in Auckland NZ when I was growing up that I know is haunted. It was a small 3 bedroom townhouse with not much space. We didn’t have much money back then so we lived where we could. My father worked long hours and my mother too. I was 15 when I started to notice things happening. One night I was asleep in my room when I saw a light outside my door. I didn’t think much of it because we sometimes left the light on for my sister to go to the bathroom. But this light was diferent it seemed to get dull and then bright again like a light was pulsating. I decided to get up and have a look. I opened the door and it was dark, I looked downstairs and saw a light moving towards the kitchen, like someone had a torch. I decided to follow it as I tought it might be my father, I walked down the stairs and notice the light had stopped by the kitchen sink, but there was no – one around, as I walked into the kitchen the kitchen became very warm, and too to my surpise I looked at the stove and saw that someone had left the elements on, I quickly turned them off and as I did this the kitchen went dark. I stood there in fear and began thinking ,what just happened. I then ran upstairs past my bedroom and jumped into my mothers bed I was shaking and my mum woke up and asked me what was wrong. After telling her my dad had woken up and gone to investigate the kitchen. He came back and looked at my mum with a strange look I said to him “what was it dad” he turned to me and said it’s okay mate sleep in here tonight. It took me awhile to go back to sleep but before drifting off to sleep I could hear my mother and father whispering about something but I couldn’t work it out. After time I had forgotten what had happened that night but kept hearing thnigs like doors openning and closing, footsteps in the hallway, someone walking up and down the stairs. The weidest thing I noticed is that no -one liked sleeping in my room because it was either too cold or too hot to stay in there but for some reason I never had a problem. Many years later we moved out west. We were sitting at dinner one night and I am now 21 years old. We began talking about the old house and then the conversation took a dive. My mother and father refused to talk about it. I had to know so I kept asking “What’s wrong with that house”…being religeous my father didn’t want to talk about it and left the table..My mother began….she said that when we moved in all those years ago they had a visit from the previous owner and they were told that the previous owners brother had died in the house…the story went that one night he had gone out for some drinks and had come home in a sorry state. He went into the kitchen to make him something to eat and then went up to his room. Before he went into his room he slipped and missed the last step and fell backwards down the stairs breaking his neck at the bottom. When I heard this everything made sense the noise of the open and closing doors and the stove. But nothing gave a chill as much as finding out that the room that use to belong to him was my room. I later spoke to my father and realised why he didn’t want to talk about it ….times were hard back then and we didn’t have the money to move so my father did what he could to protect us and that’s by keeping us close…especially at night. My dads gone now but I know he still protects me…especially at night.

Caretaker,,,this story gave me some insight of what you have experienced… he probably wanted you guys out, worrying that the story would get out and he would never sell the house!!!

The house that my parents built brand new in 1969, also had a lot of paranormal events going on..all we knew was,, there was an old trailor park on the 2 acres ,many years before.. i used to hear music in other rooms also.. sounded like, old victorian, music, and i also heard people talking… mom and dad lived in this house for over 35 years…

a lot of strange things happened in that house over the years… my mom, recently told me, that she also used to hear music and people talking, but would never tell us kids, thinking it would just scare us to death…..she also told me that sometimes, it seemed as if the room was changing around her, especaily, my old bedroom…

i have always been facinated by haunted houses!!! i will post as time goes on about other paranormal things that used to happen there…..

what a great story!!! by the way,, my dad’s name was David…….

My parents live in an older home the past couple of months when they are awake at approximently 2 am they are hearing what sounds to be a music box with a tune of happy birthday playing. there is no such music box in the room or the entire home. Friday night we gave a suprise birthday party for my mother , that night the music came yet it was over her recliner and then moved while playing to another corner of the room moving to the ceiling and then down to the floor. This is the first time it has moved from the original corner it was playing. It will last approx 3 minutes every time.. My mother is convinced it is spirit of her mother wishing her happy birthday from beyond ( her birthday is wed) Does anyone know if spirits can create music this way?
    thank you

  29. KNOWTOMUCH says:

Katrina,, sure they can!!! that is wonderful……my whole life, i have heard music coming from other rooms, of course when i get there, nothing…. i bet it is her mother wishing her a happy birthday…. i really think that spirits can communicate in many ways……ktm
